Job Summary:

As a Design Engineer at Caterpillar, you will play a critical role in developing innovative, high-performance solutions for heavy machinery and equipment. You will be responsible for designing components and systems that meet rigorous engineering standards, customer requirements, and manufacturing capabilities. This role requires strong analytical thinking, proficiency in CAD/CAE tools, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams—including product development, manufacturing, and quality—to ensure designs are optimized for performance, cost, and reliability. Your contributions will directly impact Caterpillar’s mission to build a better, more sustainable world.

What You Will Do:

+ Design and develop dynamic sealing solutions and test methods

+ Direct the creation and maintenance of engineering drawings

+ Communicate with internal partner teams and suppliers

+ Execute validation utilizing various lab equipment

+ Inspect and determine root cause of failed seals

+ Validate the performance of sealing systems via directing performance simulation, part physical test characterization, and definition of on-machine test measurements

+ Support team on cost, quality, and assurance of supply initiatives

Education requirement:

+ Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge through professional expertise.

What skills you will have:

Technical Excellence:

+ Provides expert assessment on structural analysis and design of heavy structures using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as Creo Simulate and Structural Stress to ensure robust technical solutions.

+ Collaborates with cross-functional SMEs and leverages APQP for design validation and issue resolution, ensuring alignment with Caterpillar’s engineering standards.

+ Assume accountability for personal technical performance and holds others responsible for theirs.

Product Design and Development:

+ Applies Creo Parametric, Creo Simulate, and Structural Stress to design and validate components for durability and compliance with Caterpillar standards.

+ Leads proof-of-concept development using rapid prototyping tools and digital mockups, integrating feedback from DFMEA and Design Reviews.

+ Ensures product quality through integration of Six Sigma methodologies and Design Verification Plans (DVP&R).

Product Design - MFG:

+ Knowledge collaborating with suppliers to optimize designs for ease of manufacturability focusing on Team Feasibility Commitments.

+ Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including procurement, production, and quality assurance, to align design objectives with manufacturing capabilities using APQP methodology.

+ Provides strategic input on complex design challenges by reviewing Tolerance Stack-up Analysis.

Effective Communication:

+ Adapt documents and presentations for the intended audience using structured reporting tools and dashboards in Power BI and SharePoint.

+ Demonstrate both empathy and assertiveness when communicating a need or defending a position

+ Communicate well downward, upward, and outward.

+ Employ appropriate methods of persuasion when soliciting agreement.

Analytical Thinking:

+ Ability to interpret engineering data, test results, and performance metrics.

+ Knowledge conducting root cause analysis and troubleshooting design issues.

+ Familiarity with statistical tools and methods (e.g., Six Sigma, FMEA).

+ Knowledge in evaluating design trade-offs and making data-driven decisions.

+ Ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights.

Managing Multiple Priorities:

+ Proven experience handling multiple design projects or components simultaneously.

+ Strong organizational skills and familiarity with project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Jira).

+ Ability to prioritize tasks based on deadlines, impact, and resource availability.

+ Knowledge collaborating across cross-functional teams (e.g., manufacturing, quality, supply chain).

+ Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and timelines.

Computer-Aided Design & Engineering:

+ Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Creo, CATIA, SolidWorks) for 3D modeling and drafting.

+ Knowledge of CAE tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus) for simulation and analysis.

+ Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and engineering standards.

+ Ability to create and revise detailed engineering drawings and BOMs.

+ Knowledge integrating CAD models into PLM systems (e.g., Teamcenter, Windchill).

The Top Candidates will also have:

+ Experience with the following:

+ Part design control – Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process, engineering drawing standards, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T)

+ New Product Introduction (NPI) and Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) projects

+ Component or materials testing in lab and/or field

Additional Information:

This position requires the candidate to **work onsite five days a week at the Mossville, IL office.**

Summary Pay Range:

$95,640.00 - $143,520.00
