    Servicing the Southwest area out of the MnDOT St. Cloud - Statewide Radio Communication Radio Shop.

     

    As a Telecommunications Specialist, provide statewide radio communication services for the Southwest area of Minnesota. This position works in both a team environment and independently to maintain and improve the State of Minnesota’s Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER) system. The ARMER system is one of the largest P25 Motorola trunking systems in the world serving over 90,000 public safety professionals. The position also maintains and improves MnDOT’s Road Weather Information System (RWIS) that provides real time road and weather information from 160 statewide monitoring sites. Daily work includes:

     

    • Performing installation, preventive maintenance, calibration and repairs on a variety of equipment and sensors, such as transmitters, receivers, site controllers, combiners, antenna systems, digital microwave, etc.

    • Installing and supporting mobile two-way radios and portables.

    • Maintaining network backhaul equipment including routers, switches, and multiplexers.

    • Maintaining equipment inventory and database records.

     

    Occasional instate travel for training, may include several overnight stays.

    Minimum Qualifications

    NOTE: To facilitate proper crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

     

    FCC Radio-Telephone license or be an APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officers) or NABER (National Association of Business and Educational Radio) certified technician or equivalent **within six (6) months of hire date.**

    AND

    A two year degree in Wireless Communications, Electronics, Communications Systems Installation and Repair Technology, computers, computer peripheral equipment and local and wide area computer networks, or equivalent or certificate from a military communications/electronics school or one (1) year experience as a radio, TV or electronics equipment repairman, and/or radio station engineer;

    AND

    One year of experience is required that demonstrates the following:

    1. Skill in troubleshooting techniques, soldering and handling sensitive electronic equipment and parts;

    2. Knowledge of radio communication procedures and ability to operate communication equipment;

    3. Knowledge of computer hardware, software, network operating systems, and capabilities sufficient to program and diagnose radio equipment.

    4. Knowledge of information technology networks, theory’s and practices, including wide-area and local-area networks.

    5. Ability to read and interpret detailed technical information sufficient to carry out electronic communication equipment installation, maintenance and repair.

    6. Necessary human relations skills, including courtesy and the ability to work well with a wide variety of customers, contractors and colleagues.

     

    Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds
