Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
Exercise Physiologists assess, evaluate, and prescribe safe and effective exercise for patients with cardiac injury, disease or abnormality. Exercise Physiologists (1) orientates the patients to the equipment; (2) monitor hemodynamic responses during exercise; (3) examine proper exercising technique; (4) develop an appropriate exercising heart rate range; (5) teach patients independent exercise habits; (6) provide information for positive lifestyle changes. The Exercise Physiologist will reevaluate patient’s progress during their medically supervised cardiac rehabilitation. Exercise Physiologists will interact with members of this department as well as other hospital departments to provide for essential department operational tasks, including patient treatment and continuing education, infection control, and performance improvement.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs patient assessments/reassessments on a regular basis in accordance within AACVPR guidelines.
• The priority of data collection is determined by the patient’s immediate condition or functional status.
• Pertinent data are collected using appropriate assessment techniques.
• Data collection involves the patient, significant others, and health care providers when appropriate.
• The data collection process is systematic and ongoing.
• Nursing diagnoses are derived from the assessment data.
2. In collaboration with interdisciplinary members of the team, formulates a plan of care including expected outcomes for each patient based on diagnoses derived from patient assessments.
• The plan individualized to the patient’s condition, age or needs.
• The plan is developed with the patient, significant others, and health care providers, when appropriate.
• The plan reflects current nursing practice.
• The plan is documented.
• The plan provides for continuity of care.
• The plan is appropriate to the patient’s age, developmental age, educational needs and family/guardian expectations as related to the diagnosis.
• Assist the patient in designing an exercise, education, and lifestyle modification program to meet ADL’s recreational and vocational needs.
3. Performs skills proficiently and in accordance with the standards of care.
• Utilizes all equipment in the unit appropriate to patient with maximum efficiency and effectiveness based on knowledge and education.
• Provides for patient safety at all times.
• Verifies accuracy of medication administration by following all safety measures.
• Interventions are implemented in a safe and appropriate manner and documented.
• Applies knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to identify patient and family requirements relative to age-specific needs (See age specific criteria addendum).
• Teaches, supervises, and serves as a resource person and delegates in accordance with the competency level of all staff members.
• Provides health care teaching to patient/family or significant other with documentation.
4. Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes.
• Evaluation is systematic and ongoing, including diagnoses and plan of care.
• The patient’s responses to interventions are documented.
• The effectiveness of interventions is evaluated and documented.
• The patient, significant others, and health care providers are involved in the evaluation process, when appropriate.
5. Professional development:
• Maintains and increase standards of performance and education.
• Takes initiative to increase job knowledge through additional training, cross training skill development and/or continuing education.
• Maintains continuing education requirements to remain compliant with licensure/certification where applicable.
6. Communication, public relations, and customer service:
• Understands own role in organization regarding customer service.
• Demonstrates sensitivity when communicating with visitors, patients, physicians, and coworkers.
• Consistently communicates verbally and non-verbally in a manner that demonstrates a positive and cooperative attitude.
• All phone communications will be performed in a kind, considerate, and professional manner.
7. Follows and adheres to facility and department’s guidelines (policies/procedures/protocols):
• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
• Attends or fulfils requirements for all mandatory hospital in services to include annual education, safety update and training by anniversary date.
• Attends at least 80% of department meetings on a regular basis.
• Will keep director/supervisor informed of potential problems.
• Adheres to attendance policy, will not have excessive unexcused absences, or tardiness (familiar with policy/procedure).
• Consistently adheres to department/hospital dress code policy.
• Notifies the appropriate personnel of supply/equipment needs.
• Regularly reviews hospital information and/or attends educational activities related to safety and injury prevention (annually).
• Demonstrates adherence to universal precautions, aseptic techniques, and radiation safety, utilizing proper precautions.
8. Quality/Performance Improvement:
• Demonstrates an on-going knowledge of, and participation in the department based Quality and Performance Improvement Program.
• Demonstrates an on-going knowledge of hospital performance/Process Improvement plan and participates as a team member.
• Is aware of potential improvement opportunities.
9. Performs other department related duties as needed.
• Performs minor equipment repairs and up-keep.
• Participates in informal training programs and services.
• Transports patients as needed.
• Submits patient charges at completion of procedures.
• Functions in other areas of department as needed.
10. Assists in the delivery of Inpatient Cardiac Rehab services.
• Teach the patient/family about modification of risk factors.
• Initiate behavior change through patient/family education regarding cardiac disease, exercise, and healing after a cardiac event.
• Initiate an understanding of the importance of exercise in decreasing the incidence of heart disease and improving quality of life.
• Give instructions on exercise guidelines and self-monitoring, and provide an exercise program when appropriate.
• Foster an understanding of the disease process.
• Provide progressive supervised ambulation for the patient, as tolerated.
• Serve as a referral base for outpatient cardiac rehabilitation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must be able to demonstrate understanding of HCA’s and St. David’s “Patients First” safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures. Adheres to isolation policies and procedures. Utilizes universal precautions at all times. Maintains confidentiality of patient medical records. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Works autonomously and with supervision. Interfaces with the public, physicians, staff, patients and support department representatives in a positive manner. Demonstrates the ability to perform a variety of procedures. Effective communication skills, verbal and written, and good interpersonal skills required to interact with patients, physicians, visitors, and other staff members.
