    The Mainframe & Data Center Infrastructure organization engineers, operates, and supports highly available and scalable infrastructures, which includes mainframe and middleware systems, database operations, data centers and security services.

As an Infrastructure Engineer on the mainframe, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the resilience, security, and scalability of the systems that power American Express worldwide! The Infrastructure Engineer I will lead the engineering and design of critical American Express mainframe applications and infrastructure in conjunction with solving, tuning and debugging of applications and databases using the mainframe platform and will report directly to the Engineering Director for Mainframe Operations and Engineering.

    Responsibilities:

    + Contribute to the **engineering and implementation** of modern mainframe infrastructure solutions with a focus on z/OS, z/Linux, and hybrid integration.

    + Support senior engineers in **designing, configuring, and automating** mainframe systems and applications using modern tools and practices.

    + Participate in **modernization and automation initiatives** , such as Infrastructure-as-Code, API enablement, and hybrid cloud integration.

    + Assist with the **analysis and tuning of system performance, security, and reliability** , leveraging AI and AIOps insights where applicable.

    + Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including **Infrastructure, Application, Cloud, and AI engineers** , to deliver modernization projects and optimize end-to-end performance.

    + Help define and document **technical requirements, implementation plans, and runbooks** to ensure consistent engineering standards.

    + Engage in **research and proof-of-concept activities** to evaluate emerging mainframe and automation technologies.

    + Contribute to an **agile, DevOps-driven environment** , participating in sprint planning, retrospectives, and automation-focused delivery.

    + Demonstrate commitment to **innovation, learning, and continuous improvement** , sharing insights and new ideas within the team

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + 3 years of foundational knowledge with **z/OS, JCL, RACF, LPARs

    * , and datasets** .

    + Familiarity with **automation or scripting** (Python, REXX, or YAML).

    + Experience with **DevOps concepts** (Git, Jenkins, UrbanCode Deploy, or Zowe CLI).

    + Experience with **Infrastructure-as-Code** tools such as Ansible for Z or Terraform plug-ins.

    + Bachelor's Degree

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Strong analytical and **problem-solving skills** , with an ability to diagnose and learn new systems quickly.

    + Familiarity with **security and compliance practices** (access controls, encryption, change management).

    + Excellent **communication and collaboration skills** across technical and non-technical teams.

    + A **growth mindset** and curiosity about mainframe modernization, AI integration, and intelligent automation.

    Qualifications

    Salary Range: $78,000.00 to $124,750.00 annually bonus benefits
