LAB-HISTOLOGY (BILLINGS CLINIC HOSPITAL)

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)
Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)
Starting Wage DOE: $23.87 - $28.65
Under general supervision, follows established procedures for preparation of surgical and autopsy specimens. Prepares mounts on slides and stains or treats tissue with chemicals so as to reveal specific structural details under microscopic analysis. Perform histology duties to prepare material for pathologic evaluation. Additional characteristics for the Lead Role: Acts as a lead for an assigned area of department, including assisting with the day to day operations of the department, responsible for quality control and regulatory readiness of department.
This position may be eligible for a $2500.00 sign on incentive, relocation, and tuition loan reimbursement.
Essential Job Functions
GENERAL
•Reviews clerical information including the labeling of the specimen and requisition, reconciling any discrepancies detected in labeling. Documents and evaluates clerical discrepancies on the appropriate quality assurance forms.
•Aids in the performance of intra operative consultations when requested by pathologist.
•Embeds, cuts, stains and coverslips slides efficiently.
•Performs de-calcifications and other procedures as appropriate to enhance tissue sectioning.
•Prepares laboratory solutions and reagents according to established procedures and exact formula in order to maintain adequate quantities for daily work assignments.
•Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality. Records and reviews quality control data.
•Catalogs and files reports and materials as needed.
•Distributes processed slides to Pathologists for review.
•Assists lead in supply inventory for section.
•Assists with orientation of the new staff and ongoing training/education for staff. Participates in and provides input into interviewing and hiring.
•Participates in writing procedures.
•Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing. Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants and/or Pathologists.
a) Assuring appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling,
b) Describing gross anatomic features, dissecting surgical specimens, and preparing tissues for histologic processing,
c) Performing duties relating to the administration and maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports and data. Completes all related paperwork,
d) Assuring proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
•Assist with the preparation of gross tissue sections for frozen section analysis at the request of the Pathologist Assistant and/or Pathologist.
•Assists with orientation and training of other laboratory technicians in the accessioning of specimens and may direct their work as it relates to these activities.
•Assist with maintaining policies and procedures related to gross room accessioning standard practices.
•Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
•Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.
•Assist lead with special projects.
•Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/
Minimum Qualifications
•Minimum High School or GED
•Preferred 4 Year / Bachelors Degree Bachelor of Science Degree in a laboratory or biological science field preferred
Other Minimum Qualifications:
• Completed training and passed six (6) month competency on routine histology tasks.
• Histology Technician I/Grossing Technician:
Skilled in Routine Histology tasks
Passed one (1) year competency on routine histology tasks.
Bachelor of Science Degree in a laboratory or biological science field preferred
Minimum of 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that includes 24 semester hours of science courses listed:
Six (6) semester hours of chemistry
Six (6) semester hours of biology
Twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
