Position Summary/Description:
The Principal Grants Analyst will serve as Team Lead to a group of two to three Grants Analysts in addition to being responsible for performing Pre-Award duties in the Sponsored Programs Office ( SPO ) for the School of Medicine ( SOM ). The Principal Grants Analyst should be a seasoned research administrator capable of using sound judgment in making decisions that may pertain to proposal processing priorities in a heavy deadline-driven environment. The Principal Grants Analyst will provide input on the development of standard operating procedures for the Sponsored Programs Office. The Principal Grants Analyst will work closely with the Assistant Director to manage the daily operations, ensuring the department’s goals are successfully attained. Responsibilities include providing training, guidance, and mentorship to the Grants Analysts. In support of the outreach efforts of the SPO , this position will work closely with the Director and Assistant Director to develop training materials for departmental research administrators within the School of Medicine departments. This position will function in a team environment and be responsible for the review and timely submission of SOM faculty proposals in a high deadline-driven environment to secure funding for research and other sponsored programs. The Principal Grants Analyst has delegated signature authority to provide final university approval on behalf of the Vice Chancellor for Research. The proposal review conducted by the Principal Grants Analyst includes a review of proposal budgets, budget justifications, and administrative information to ensure compliance with all regulatory bodies including IACUC , IRB , federal regulations (Uniform Guidance), sponsor guidelines, and university and state policy governing sponsored research. Proposal approval may include electronic submission using various agency systems, specifically grants.gov/cayuse and the era commons or by providing institutional signature. The Principal Grants Analyst is responsible for the review and submission of Just-in-Time ( JIT ) materials, non-competing NIH progress reports (RPPRs), the NIH grant closeout final technical reports (FRPPRs) and corresponds with the sponsoring agency representatives to provide information as required. The Principal Grants Analyst will interact with departmental staff and faculty in the School of Medicine and departments throughout the campus as well as sponsoring agency representatives.
Unit Summary:
The Sponsored Programs Office ( SPO ) is an administrative unit within the School of Medicine ( SOM ) under the purview of the Vice Dean for Research. SPO is fully committed to supporting the research mission of the SOM and protecting the overall interest and integrity of the University and School of Medicine. Our goal is to offer the highest level of customer service and research administration expertise.
The SPO staff functions as a team responsible for the review, approval, and submission of the SOM grant proposals, to the NIH , foundations, and non-profit organizations providing final university signature on behalf of the Vice Chancellor for Research. The SOM researchers typically initiate approximately 50% of all grant proposals submitted from the University. The SPO serves in a
supporting role to the SOM departments, centers, and programs. The SPO Grants Analysts conduct a careful review/analysis.
of proposals and work with the administering units to ensure adherence to all relevant policies of the University and funding agencies and compliance with any applicable State and/or Federal regulations. The SPO team also reviews/submits JIT materials and corresponds with the sponsoring agency representatives to provide information as required.
Education and Experience:
Prior research administration experience. Experience working in a central office of research administration with pre-award responsibilities. Preference for a Certified Research Administrator.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as business administration, finance or accounting.
The ideal candidate should be capable of making sound decisions regarding proposal processing priorities, resolving urgent matters, and managing proposal submission issues in a deadline-driven environment.

This position requires a sharp attention to detail; ability to multitask; excellent communication skills (both verbally and in writing); ability to prioritize using sound judgment; strong analytical skills; ability to read and interpret procedures and policies; experience using Microsoft Office software.
