Job Description
The Level I HLA Technician is a member of the HLA laboratory staff and operates with close supervision. As much as ninety (90%) percent of the time is spent performing routine tasks requiring entry level cognitive, manipulative, and problem-solving skills. Tasks involve operating and QC-ing test equipment, conducting basic level tests, collaborating with other hospital departments. Additional duties include general support functions vital for the routine operation of laboratory activities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
+ Working under supervision of a Licensed CLS,
+ Sets up routine HLA procedures using approved procedures and protocols according to career-entry level standards of practice.
+ Operates, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in routine testing.
+ Validates and documents all test results personally performed according to established procedures for manual and electronic data management and reporting.
+ Recognizes basic issues in test methodology and instrument function, and initiates decision-making activities and corrective action procedures. Acquires the ability to recognize complex problems and solve them with minimal consultation.
+ Uses established quality assurance protocols to insure accurate functioning of instruments, reagents, and analytical procedures including assaying appropriate standards and controls, and performing instrument function verifications.
+ Prepares reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.
+ Acquires a basic understanding of the theory of HLA, its complex and constantly evolving nomenclature, and genetics, as well as the technical skills and application of laboratory test procedures involved. Develops interpretive skills vital for advancement.
+ Assists in the collection of research data, as requested.
+ Interacts with physicians and other hospital staff to promote quality patient care and a positive image of the laboratory.
+ Demonstrates a solid understanding of specimen requirements, normal ranges, critical values, and acquires the knowledge of alternate HLA strategies.
+ Performs other duties and assignments as requested.

Education
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with at least one (1) year’s coursework in a Biological Science or Chemistry, or equivalent experience.
Work Experience
No experience required, but applicants with some experience in a clinical or research laboratory preferred.
