Patient Financial Counselor

Description
Completing insurance verification, eligibility and benefit determination process utilizing integrated
electronic eligibility system, payer websites, and phone for all insurance plans within the scope of
laboratory services.
• Gathers the necessary clinical information needed to obtain insurance authorization for laboratory
testing.
• Investigates insurance eligibility and obtains detailed insurance benefit verification for candidates.
Benefit details include (but are not limited to) deductibles, co-payments and out-of-pocket
expenses, policy maximums and limitations.
• Communicates the authorization status of patients to the clinical team by e-mail, EPIC in-basket
messages, or by phone.
• Provides financial consultation with patient and/or family members regarding financial aspects
when necessary or requested.
• Contacting patient as appropriate to obtain correct and updated information when necessary and
to communicate out of pocket estimate.
• Follows up on pending authorization and referral request to ensure timely completion for cases in
the assigned work queues.
• Processes appeals, including arrangement of the escalation process for clinics and clinicians to
complete peer-to-peer appeal reviews with payor utilization management when needed.
• Prioritizes work assigned to them to ensure that financial risk is minimized, and timely completion
of authorizations is optimized, while meeting daily productivity measure goals.
• Other duties as assigned.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Two (2) years working experience in a medical, billing or health insurance office setting performing insurance verification and authorization processes.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (both verbal and written) skills
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including communicating clearly and sensitively with patients, families, and referring clinicians
Skilled in effective communications, customer service, problem solving, and managing multiple priorities
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of insurance eligibility, benefits, contract language, and medical terminology
Ability to apply C-I-CARE philosophies and demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families, and staff, including during high volume times and stressful interactions.
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Moderate to advanced computer skills required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience with hospital information systems such as EPIC, is preferred.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $39.00/hr.
