The Massachusetts Cancer Registry, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) Office of Population Health, is seeking a dynamic*Education Coordinator*. As the*Massachusetts Cancer Registry (MCR) Education Coordinator,*you will play an essential role in advancing the quality and accuracy of oncology data across the Commonwealth. Serving as a subject matter expert in national cancer data standards, you will lead the development and delivery of educational programs for both new and experienced oncology data specialists and tumor registrars. Through the creation of dynamic training sessions, online learning resources, and direct engagement with hospital staff, you will ensure consistent understanding and application of cancer case abstraction protocols and reporting standards. This position offers the opportunity to influence cancer data integrity statewide by helping professionals stay current with evolving federal and national requirements. In addition to educational leadership, you will contribute significantly to the Registry’s quality assurance efforts. From overseeing data audits and delivering constructive feedback to evaluating the impact of training initiatives, your efforts will directly enhance the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of cancer reporting. This role offers the chance to combine technical expertise, educational innovation, and public health impact—supporting Massachusetts in its commitment to cancer surveillance, research, and improved patient outcomes. /*_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_*/ * Identify and assess training needs by reviewing and processing cancer data within the SEER Data Management System (SEER**DMS) as part of routine case review and editing functions. * Develop, coordinate, and deliver comprehensive training sessions for oncology data specialists (ODS) and hospital-based tumor registrars across Massachusetts. * Create, update, and distribute online educational materials outlining cancer case abstraction protocols and national standard setter requirement. * Oversee and promote the use of an online educational platform to support ongoing learning and compliance among MCR and hospital-based ODS staff. * Evaluate the effectiveness of training initiatives and disseminated educational materials, implementing improvements as needed. * Stay current with national cancer data standards and regulatory updates and provide informed recommendations for changes impacting MCR reporting requirement. * Assist in developing and implementing strategies to ensure compliance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) / National Program of Cancer Registry (NPCR) program standards and improve statewide cancer data quality. * Conduct and support quality assurance activities, including audits of hospital-reported data, feedback delivery, and follow-up to address data quality issues. * Perform research using various reference sources to verify and determine the most accurate patient residential address at time of diagnosis. * Collaborate with internal staff and external stakeholders to support program implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and strategic planning. * Assist processing of incoming data from reporting facilities and recode for quality control as needed. /*_Required Qualifications:_*/ * Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate teams effectively, including planning, assigning, and reviewing work, identifying training needs, and motivating staff to meet organizational objectives. * Strong understanding of organizational development, behavioral techniques, forecasting, and work simplification methods to improve operational efficiency. * Proficient in preparing and using visual data representations such as charts, graphs, and tables to support reporting and analysis. * Skilled in general report writing with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbal presentations. * Capable of analyzing data, drawing accurate conclusions, and making sound recommendations based on evidence and regulatory requirements. * Experienced in gathering and organizing information through document review and direct inquiry, while ensuring accuracy and adherence to procedural standards. * Knowledgeable in the laws, rules, regulations, and procedures relevant to program operations, with the ability to interpret and apply them effectively. * Adept at giving and following written and verbal instructions and communicating clearly across various organizational levels. * Proven ability to establish rapport, work collaboratively with diverse individuals, and maintain positive and professional relationships. * Flexible and adaptable in response to changing priorities or program needs, while maintaining discretion with confidential information. /*_Preferred Qualifications:_*/ * Oncology Data Specialist Certification (ODS-C) and be a certified tumor registrar. * At least two years of experience with abstracting cancer case records. * Ability to design and implement education and training materials and processes. * Capacity to generate and assess reports within a data management system (SEER*DMS). * Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications standards and guidelines governing assigned unit, and the types and uses of agency forms. * Understanding of the organizational structure and functions of the assigned agency. * Commitment to and knowledge of the principles of health and racial equity. /*_DPH Mission and Vision:_*/ The mission of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is to promote and protect health and wellness and prevent injury and illness for all people, prioritizing racial equity in health by improving equitable access to quality public health and health care services and partnering with communities most impacted by health inequities and structural racism.
