    Description of Work Unit

    The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

    Position Summary

    The Natural Resource Specialist is a Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) Team member and Colorado State University employee who will be stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Fort Polk is located in west-central Louisiana among the longleaf pine forests of the Kisatchie National Forest.

     

    This position will support the Fort Polk Conservation Branch programs by assisting with the management of botanical resources of conservation concern, mitigation monitoring, maneuver damage, and National Environmental Policy Act ( NEPA ) processes with an emphasis on botany-related requests. Support from this position will include assisting the INRMP Program with review and development of NEPA documentation to evaluate potential effects to sensitive species due to planned projects and military training on the installation. Additionally, this position may support the INRMP Program Manager and other Conservation Branch SMEs with field data collection, data entry, and assist with analysis, report writing and SOP development. The Natural Resource Specialist will work independently or as part of a team to assist the Conservation Branch.

     

    Work will include driving 4×4 trucks into the field to conduct surveys, assessments, and monitoring. Work will mostly take place Monday through Friday with an occasional request to work on a weekend. This position balances office and field-based work and, as such, the Natural Resource Specialist will be required to work outdoors in challenging conditions.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Must be a current CSU and CEMML employee

    + Bachelor of Science in environmental science, natural resources, or related field that is conducive to managing all aspects of the position

    + 1 year of experience in the natural resources field

    + Experience with technical writing/reporting

    + Experience communicating with stakeholders and/or the public

    + Experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date

    + The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Experience with botany surveys

    + Experience with ArcGIS working with/creating shapefiles, maps, or geodatabases

    + Knowledge about/experience with NEPA document preparation, NEPA document tracking, post- NEPA monitoring

    + Experience working in the southern/Louisiana ecosystems

    + Experience operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs/UTVs

    + Experience working on a military installation

    + Experience working on Fort Polk

    Provide support necessary to assist the Fort Polk Conservation Branch in implementing management guidelines of Conservation Branch programs through INRMP , NEPA , Maneuver Damage and Mitigation Monitoring, IPMP , and Threatened and Endangered Species Management Programs. This includes but not limited to protocol/project planning, design, implementation, report writing and data analysis, and NEPA analysis. Work individually or as part of a team in field settings around Fort Polk and associated training lands. Work will take place in remote areas with exposure to challenging physical and environmental conditions. Use of GPS units will be required.

    Preparation and maintenance of informative ENRMD and Conservation Branch displays and presentations for public viewing. Participate in public outreach programs to Army personnel, local schools, clubs, and societies.

    Duty/Responsibility

    Support maneuver damage inspections on a rotating basis after Army training activities occur on Fort Polk training lands. Assessments will follow protocol provided by the Maneuver Damage team and will occasionally occur on weekends. Goal of inspections is to assess damage to landscape and habitat caused by training activities and provide data necessary for the Integrated Training Area Management ( ITAM ) team to remediate damage.
