    Description of Work Unit

     

    The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Position Summary

    This position presents the opportunity to be involved in the development of a new laboratory focused on bovine health in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Under the supervision of the PI, the successful candidate will participate in sample processing, organization, and in vitro experimentation. The candidate will also be expected to assist in maintaining a clean, stocked, functional laboratory space. There is also an opportunity for the candidate to participate in on-farm data collection.

    Position Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in a program providing theoretical and practical training in biological sciences.

    + 1-2 years Hands-on relevant professional experience in laboratory practices such as bacterial culturing, ELISA , PCR , flow cytometry, DNA extraction, or determination of validity/reliability and quality control

    OR

    + Recent Master’s degree in biological sciences providing experience in laboratory practices listed above and no other significant professional experience.

     

    Relevant professional fields: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, animal science

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface with graduate students and collaborating faculty members

    + Attention to detail and technique, exacting high expectations and performance while working with samples and biological preparations

    + Experience with keeping meticulous records using electronic laboratory notebook software

    + Possesses a working knowledge of animal agriculture

    + Self-motivation and ability to work without constant direct supervision

    + Assist in the organization and maintenance of the laboratory to ensure a clean, stocked, and functional work environment.

    + Support ordering and inventory processes, maintain supply levels, and assist with vendor communication and documentation of purchases.

    + Maintain compliance with biosafety regulations and recordkeeping in collaboration with the PI.

    + Prepare and process field samples and ensure accurate labeling and organization.

    + Contribute to the overall efficiency and productivity of laboratory operations by supporting daily activities and project needs.

    + Assist the PI with training and providing guidance to graduate and DVM students on laboratory procedures and safety practices.
