Job Description
The State District Veterinarian will work in the assigned geographical district as an assistant to the State Veterinarian and as a representative of the Animal Industry Division. The District Veterinarian will act as an assistant to the State Veterinarian overseeing and providing direction to veterinarians and producers for the purpose of protecting the health of Iowa livestock, producers and consumers. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license for statewide travel and hold a current Iowa veterinary license. This position covers a Southeast Iowa territory including the counties of: Appanoose, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello, Washington, and Wayne. The domicile may be adjusted within the assigned territory at the time of hire.
Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Working with veterinarians, veterinary clinics, and producers on a regular basis
+ Ensuring the health of all Iowa livestock, poultry, and pets
+ Administration of the various cooperative disease eradication and surveillance programs including brucellosis, tuberculosis and scrapie
+ Administration of the state's disease control and certification programs including Chronic Wasting Disease, Johnes, Equine Infectious Anemia, and Avian Influenza programs
+ Train as an official Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician to recognize foreign animal diseases, performing foreign animal disease investigations, and respond to a foreign animal disease outbreak
+ Performing animal neglect/abuse/torture investigations
+ Work at Iowa State Fair, public speaking, and training of new employees
+ Maintain a valid Iowa veterinary license and federal level 2 accreditation
+ Prepare all required reports
+ Communicate to the public in a variety of settings
+ Be a leader
Qualifications:
+ Graduation from an accredited college or university with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine, and experience equal to one year of full-time work as a practicing, licensed veterinarian
+ Must be able to obtain a license in the State of Iowa to practice veterinary medicine.
+ Possess a valid driver’s license for statewide travel.
Knowledge and Skills:
+ Able to work well under pressure and with minimal supervision
+ Organized and keeps complete and accurate records.
+ Has an interest in livestock and companion animals.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Aptitude to learn and apply Iowa codes and rules pertinent to Animal Industry.
+ Maintain valid driver’s license for travel between work sites
+ Proficient computer skills in a Windows environment preferred.
+ No allergies to animals.
+ Committed to the mission of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and to the success of the Animal Industry Division.
+ Strong leadership and organizational skills.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
+ Experience in veterinary practice and/or public health.

Working Conditions: Kneel and bend, able to carry 5 to 15 pounds of equipment routinely, on occasion up to 75 pounds when moving animals and able to walk up to ½ mile and stand for one hour at times. Move throughout a facility to complete required work in cold, hot, wet, slippery and other conditions
commonly found in animal facilities.
