This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Software Engineering leader to lead the development of innovative software solutions within our Early Clinical Development (ECD) department in Roche/Genentech. In this critical role, you will drive the strategic direction and execution of software engineering initiatives, enabling the acceleration of clinical trial development and ultimately bringing life-changing medicines to patients faster. You will lead a talented team of engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

The Opportunity

As a leader of Software Engineering, you will make a significant impact by:

+ Providing strategic engineering leadership, identifying new opportunities to build common, and scalable solutions and leading, mentoring, and developing a diverse team of software, data, and machine learning engineers, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration.

+ Driving the technical vision and delivery of robust data pipeline and applications across key domains in Clinical Trial Development.

+ Championing technical excellence by improving our application architecture and data ecosystem, leveraging modern, cloud-first, and best development design practices.

+ Creating software which integrates with generative AI models appropriate for our data and enabling advanced analytics and AI/ML capabilities by delivering integrated data sets and facilitating model implementation.

+ Following AI/Software developments at Roche/Genentech to build collaboration and identify existing solutions and building and maintaining strong partnerships with key stakeholders, data scientists, and leaders across our global organization.

+ Lead engineering strategy by making key technical decisions to drive consolidation, reduce technical debt, and develop common solutions across domains.

+ Advancing interoperability by designing global applications that integrate seamlessly across workflows in clinical trial development life cycle.

+ Overseeing the full talent lifecycle, from implementing an inclusive recruitment strategy to retaining and developing junior team members. Manage the resources effectively.

Who You Are:

We are looking for a leader who is passionate about technology, people, and creating impactful solutions. You are someone who can think strategically while delivering on commitments, and you thrive in a collaborative environment.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

+ 8+ years of experience leading software teams/projects and a Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a similar technical field, combined with extensive experience in software engineering.

+ Significant experience successfully leading and managing engineering teams, with a passion for mentoring and developing talents and a proven track record of leading large, complex technical projects from zero to one, influencing technical decisions, and collaborating effectively with cross functional teams.

+ Deep technical knowledge of modern software engineering, cloud platforms, data storage solutions, and building scalable web applications and deep technical knowledge of Generative AI and machine learning, with knowledge on deploying AI-integrated systems.

+ Excellent communication and partnership skills, with the ability to think strategically and foster an inclusive team environment and is recognised as a collaborative leader, mentor, and coach who builds trust and fosters shared ownership.

+ Experienced in leading software and data engineering teams, with proven success delivering enterprise-scale solutions.

+ Strong technical background in building robust data pipelines, applications, and full-stack solutions (front-end, back-end, databases - JavaScript, Vue, Python, SQL) and skilled in modern software engineering approaches (cloud-native design, APIs, microservices, event-driven systems).

+ Familiar with clinical trial development field and associated systems (EDC/Rave, Veeva, Snowflake).

+ Strategic advocate who balances long-term vision with urgent delivery and passionate about technical excellence, product usability, scalability, and reducing complexity.

Onsite presence on our South San Francisco campus is expected for at least 3 days a week.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $207,500- $385,300. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
