Job Description
The Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science, and Humanities at New York University is seeking to hire an instructor for an graduate level course titled “Ethics of Data Science”. This fourteen week course is offered in person on NYU’s Washington Square campus on Wednesdays from 4:55pm to 6:55 pm.pm starting January 21st 2026.
The course description
•Course is designed to build students’ ethical imaginations and skills for collecting, storing, sharing and analyzing data derived from human subjects including data used in algorithms. The course provides historical background to understand the tenets of informed consent, discrimination, and privacy. Using case study design, students will explore current applications of quantitative reasoning in organizations, algorithmic transparency, and unintended automation of discrimination via data that contains biases rooted in race, gender, class, and other characteristics.”
Responsibilities
The instructor is expected to do the following: provide lectures once a week at the aforementioned times; coordinate release of materials; monitor student progress; and offer support outside of class (e.g. through discussion forums and office hours). Some materials are available in the form of a previous syllabus.
Pay Statement
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the contact hour rate for this position is $222.27. This rate is based on the collective bargaining agreement with Local 7902.

Qualifications
Qualified Applicants will have an advanced degree (PhD preferred). Previous experience teaching a similar course to graduate students is preferred. Previous experience teaching more broadly is required.
