Summary The official title of this position is Health Aid. The employee will serve as the initial contact for patients arriving at the San Juan VA Medical Center and will provide patient assistance in outpatient areas of the San Juan VA Medical Center, in San Juan, PR. Responsibilities ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** MAJOR DUTIES: Assists patients arriving or leaving the Medical Center, helping them get in and out of their vehicles, loading and unloading patient wheelchairs when necessary, and guiding/escorting them to the appropriate designated clinic. Provides information and assists them in returning to their cars. This service requires the opening and closing of patients' wheelchairs, taking them in or out of the car's trunk or back seat, as well as making available other equipment the patient may use, such as walkers, etc. Transports patients via wheelchair to designated areas in the hospital and other areas mentioned above. May have to transport items such as lab specimens, reports, prosthetic items that belong to patient being transported, etc. Maintains equipment clean (wheelchairs) and in designated areas. Guides ambulatory patients and/or visitors to hospital's clinics, administration offices, programs, or activities. Conducts daily rounds to look for wheelchairs throughout the clinics, parking lot, and the Emergency Room, among other areas of the facility. Helps at the main information desk as a greeter assisting our Veteran population, their families, and visitors. Uses VISTA to verify appointments for patients. Assist patients in making ground transportation arrangements by contacting VA shuttle, taxi services, etc. Orients patients on the availability of the shuttle services. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Other - 7:00AM to 3:30PM; 7:30AM to 4PM; or 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Qualifications LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: This position requires the ability to communicate proficiently, orally and in writing, in English and Spanish. IN ADDITION TO THE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY, YOU MUST ALSO POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE OR EDUCATION TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION: Six months of General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. OR Education: Successful completion of one year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields. (Transcript required and must be received by the closing date of the announcement.) OR An equivalent combination of experience and education (i.e., 3 months of general experience and 6 months of education) as described above. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Agility Computer Skills Customer Service (Clerical/Technical) Infection Control Veteran and Customer Focus IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The position requires long periods of standing and walking, bending, stretching, and pushing on a recurrent basis. It also requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to enable the incumbent to perform his/her duties. The incumbent must keep his/her uniform clean and neat in appearance and must report to duty promptly as scheduled. When working at the main information desk the position requires sitting for at least two hours.
