    Position Summary/Description:

    The Senior Assistant Dean of Students ( SADS ) is a leader in the Dean of Students office ( DOS ). The position represents DOS office leading, managing, and contributing to the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of campus, Student Affairs, and DOS priorities and initiatives. The SADS plans and coordinates day-to-day DOS engagement in large-scale, high-interest, and/or critical events, case management for students under interim actions as authorized by the Dean of Students, and oversight of the University Approved Absence Office. The Senior Assistant Dean of Students may serve as a department liaison to campus and community partners, including but not limited to the Office of Emergency Management and Planning, the Carolina Behavioral Assessment and Management, Educational Policy Committee, and Equal Opportunity and Compliance teams in the collaboration on and coordination of planning, education, outreach, and response efforts.

     

    This position also directs and/or manages aspects of the DOS department functions, including but not limited to large-scale student outreach and support, Student Affairs Critical Incident Response Team ( CIRT ) training and case review, assessment, emergency planning, and engagement in new student orientation and transition programing. Further, the position may lead, develop, and implement outreach and education materials for varied audiences, across multiple mediums, connected to the position’s responsibilities and department needs.

     

    As the Senior Assistant Dean of Students, this position is an essential resource, advocate, and liaison for Carolina’s diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents/families, and community partners that support and contribute to student resiliency and success at Carolina. This position is highly collaborative across all functions and responsibilities and plays an active role in non-clinical student case management, generally and especially with increased acuity or complexity, developing and implementing both long- and short-term care and response plans. Example concerns include basic needs insecurity (i.e., housing, food, etc.), physical and mental health, adjustment concerns, student safety, academic, personal/family crisis, and integration into campus life. The Senior Assistant Dean is responsible for maintaining awareness of campus, community, state, and federal resources and initiating and cultivating relationships that advance the Dean of Students team’s ability to respond holistically in support of Carolina students, as well as to campus needs, especially before, during, and after large-scale, critical, or crisis events.

     

    The position includes responsibility for recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of professional staff.

     

    This position serves as a member of the Critical Incident Response Team ( CIRT ), the Student Affairs on-call student crisis/emergency team and will support campus high interest events and pan-university emergency response needs. This position reports to the Dean of Students, is designated as a Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee and must work collaboratively with other members of the Dean of Students team, as well as on- and off-campus colleagues and partners.

     

    The Senior Assistant Dean of Students is an in-person role that may have limited hybrid opportunities.

    Education and Experience:

    + Five years of full-time relevant professional experience obtained post-graduate/professional degree attainment.

    + Professional experience working in an environment and culture of a highly selective, competitive research university with the ability to work collaboratively with on and off-campus partners, including faculty.

    + Direct training and professional related to behavioral threat assessment and management, emergency response and management, the administration of complex policies and procedures in a university environment.

    + Demonstrated experience and skills aiding and support for a large and diverse case load of individuals who may be involved in or impacted by personal crisis, mental health concerns, trauma, or other disruptive/disturbing events with great care and sensitivity; 24 hour on-call experience is notable.

    + Professional experience in one or more university program or service areas including, but not limited to non-clinical case management, student emergency fund administration, suicide prevention and intervention, student and/or student organization advising, first amendment/free speech, crime victim/survivor services, or financial literacy education.

    + Ability to navigate sensitive situations with diplomacy while exercising excellent judgment that is congruent with federal, state, and university policy.

    + Successful candidates must demonstrate a positive attitude and desire to contribute to the Carolina community.

    + Excellent communicator (written and verbal) with experience delivering information to diverse constituencies in individual, as well as small and large group settings using multiple formats (e.g., in-person, telephone, virtual/video).

    + Working knowledge of Advocate Care Network database by Simplicity.

    Essential Skills:

    + Demonstrated leadership experience and effectiveness in cultivating care for students, faculty, staff, and community partners who reflect the diverse identities that exist in the university environment.

    + Knowledge of current research, trends, and best practices related to behavioral threat assessment and management, emergency and crisis management and planning and the administration of complex policies and procedures.

    + Experience effectively assisting and/or supporting a large and diverse case load of individuals who are involved in or impacted by personal crisis, mental health concerns, trauma, and other disruptive/disturbing life events (e.g., 1-1 meetings, making referrals, service coordination) with great care and sensitivity.

    + Experience developing, implementing, and assessing effective programs and services.

    + Experience working autonomously and as an effective member of a collaborative and fast-paced team.

    + Experience effectively prioritizing and navigating complex emergent situations and easily adapting to changing priorities based on emergent needs.

    + Experience managing confidential and sensitive information and situations with diplomacy and demonstration of excellent critical thinking and sound judgement.

    + Understanding of the environment and culture of a highly selective, competitive research university with the ability to work collaboratively with on and off-campus partners, including faculty.

    + Availability/flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.

    + Valid NC Driver’s License or eligibility to hold a valid NC Driver’s License.
