    The Deschutes County Road Department is responsible for the development, operation, and maintenance of the County road system, consisting of approximately 900 miles of roadway.     ABOUT THE JOB:

    Deschutes County is accepting applications for an Equipment Mechanic with a preferred background in heavy truck repair. The Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing a variety of skilled mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and modifications to automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment, and other machinery and construction equipment in shop and field environments.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Perform p reventative maintenance on all types of automotive, heavy truck, and heavy construction equipment including upfitting, inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, repairing and replacing components and related parts.

    + Conduct inspections and tune-ups using diagnostic equipment like computer access tools and voltage meters.

    + M ajor repairs of gas and diesel equipment including engine, transmission, differential, final drive, front end, hydraulic, and related equipment systems.

    + Completing a variety of tire replacements and repairs, test driving, fueling, and parking of equipment.

    + Troubleshooting, rebuilding, welding, and fabricating parts and accessories.

    What You Will Bring:

    Knowledge of or experience with:

    + Standard methods, materials, tools, equipment, and technology of the mechanic trade.

    + Mechanical principles, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

    + Testing equipment used for testing and repairing starting systems, charging systems, engine performance testing, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, fuel systems, drive trains and related automotive and heavy equipment components.

    Skill in:

    + Diagnosing and making skilled repairs and adjustments.

    + Locating, diagnosing and repairing most mechanical malfunctions in gas- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.

    + Welding, fabricating, and modifying equipment, performing engine performance tests and repairs on diesel and gas engines using diagnostic tools.

    + Using a computerized Fleet Management Program for timekeeping, opening and closing work orders, and related fleet programs.

    + Driving all County equipment/vehicles on roads for field repair and test driving to diagnose and confirm repair.

    Compensation

     

    $5,096.75 to $6,581.85 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union represented position is available immediately.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High school diploma or equivalent;

    + AND five (5) years mechanic experience preferably including experience in maintenance and repair of construction equipment or satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training as determined by hiring authority.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience in maintenance and repair of heavy trucks.

     

    Necessary Special Requirements

     

    Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

     

    Must have dependable transportation and be able and willing to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.

     

    Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon Class A CDL license within one year of hire date.

    Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent will continuously be required to walk, push/pull, bend/twist/rotate arm, wrist and forearm, grasp and lift up to 24 pounds; frequently be required to stand, bend, stoop, twist, kneel, squat, half kneel, use fingers/hands, rotate right/left, balance, and reach overhead, forward, low level, behind and across, and lift 25 to 50 pounds; will occasionally be required to use foot controls with right and left feet, side bending, remain in static position, flexing, crawl, crouch, climb stairs and ladders, and lift 51 to 74 pounds.

     

    Working Environment

     

    Work is performed in a variety of settings inside and outside with exposure to heat, humidity and cold, around moving machinery, working at heights, in congested areas, with inadequate lighting or glare, with noise and vibrations.
