Overview
Tigard Public Library is seeking our next Bilingual (Spanish/English) Youth Services Librarian to be a primary connection for providing library services to Tigard’s Spanish speaking youth and families! This position provides direct customer service both at the library and out in the community; collaborates with colleagues to develop and deliver culturally relevant and sustaining programs for youth of all ages; manages several library collections with an emphasis on Spanish language materials for youth; and serves on the City of Tigard’s internal translations team.
The ideal person in this position enjoys working with the public and is passionate about providing services to Spanish speaking youth and families where they are in the community. The ideal candidate approaches their work with curiosity, continuously grows their professional knowledge, and adapts to change with a positive outlook. They thrive on variety and are equally comfortable helping a new reader find just the right book as they are helping a job seeker reformat a resume.
Examples of Duties
+ Builds and maintains relationships with local schools and community organizations, particularly those that serve Tigard’s youth and Spanish speaking communities.
+ Develops, promotes, presents, and evaluates developmentally appropriate library activities and events for youth and families (including storytimes) with a focus on meeting the interests and needs of Tigard’s Spanish speaking communities.
+ Creates a welcoming experience for all library users by providing excellent customer service through reference, readers advisory, and technology support.
+ Builds, maintains, and highlights diverse and inclusive collections of library materials.
+ Supports strategic library projects and initiatives by working collaboratively with library teammates.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
+ Ability to speak, read and write English and Spanish fluently.
+ Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional librarianship including collection development & analysis, program planning, reference and readers’ advisory.
+ Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice as it relates to designing activities, managing behaviors and selecting materials for youth.
+ Knowledge of and/or experience with Spanish-speaking communities, demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the communities being served.
+ Strong cultural sensitivity and competence.
+ Skill in building and maintaining strong community partnerships.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities, to perform the essential functions of the position, may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
+ Master's degree in library science from an accredited college or university; and
+ Some library experience
+ Ability to speak, read and write English and Spanish fluently (A bilingual assessment will be given shortly after hire)
Supplemental Information
Union Representation: SEIU
Schedule: This position is 40 hours per week (1 FTE) and requires regular evening and weekend shifts. Expected work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday, with a Tuesday evening shift.
