Who we’re looking for
Toyota’s Vehicle Prototype Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Senior Quality Engineer to support prototype vehicle builds.
Reporting to the Prototype Development Senior Engineering Manager, the primary responsibility of this role is to work with suppliers to manufacture prototype parts with the timing and accuracy to meet vehicle build schedule and requirements. Additionally, this role will support low volume production by creating and implementing a robust inline quality process.
What you’ll be doing
Traditional Development Prototype Projects
+ Develop operation plan for Prototype Quality process, from Genzu stage through Confirmation Vehicle (CV) stage.
+ Coordinate with and support Toyota Centers for their Check Fixture activity during Confirmation Vehicle (CV) stage.
+ Support Design, Purchasing, and Production Manufacturing Plant Quality Engineering in leveling up problems, prior to the Confirmation Vehicle (CV) build.
+ Operation Plan tracking for progress to meet project needs.
+ Track and follow overall build quality issues to closure.
+ Lead investigation of part quality issues found in the PD Assembly process, and coordinate root cause analysis with Design and NAMC-Quality Engineering.
+ Lead project reflection for Prototype - Quality.
Low Volume Production Projects
+ Create and lead overall inline vehicle quality strategy.
+ Review and approve prototype supplier manufacturing and quality plans.
+ Review and approve Quality Control Method (QCM) and Final Inspection Report (FIR) from suppliers for prototype parts.
+ Track and report supplier parts quality issues throughout the build.
+ Lead project reflection for Prototype - Quality.
Additional responsibilities, due to cyclical work in PD
+ Support Prototype, Quality technicians and specialists in supplier issue tracking, analysis, and countermeasure implementation.
+ Support Prototype-Evaluation engineering (Waterleak, Serviceability, and Routing Quality Assurance), by CAD data analysis, drawing review, and conducting physical vehicle evaluations.
Ongoing
+ Escalate issues to Sr. Manager in timely manner.
+ Coach/mentor less experienced engineers/co-ops.
Travel
+ Supplier visits, approximately 5-10% of time.
+ Japan trips, approximately 1 time per year, 1-2 weeks total.
What you bring
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
+ 5+ years of automotive engineering experience.
+ 3+ years in manufacturing quality support for assembly, machining, paint, or body weld.
+ Experience in making or reviewing Supplier and Toyota drawings.
+ Demonstrate proficient use with 3D CAD.
+ Experience in leading a dedicated or cross functional team and/or project.
+ An ability and willingness to coach/mentor less experienced engineers/co-ops
+ Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally, up to 10% of the time. Japan trips, approximately 1 time per year, 1-2 weeks total.
+ Must be able to work overtime up to 25% of the time including weekends.
Added bonus if you have
+ Experience in other engineering field such as Design, Procurement, or Manufacturing engineering.
+ Have a thorough understanding of the overall vehicle structures.
+ Vehicle evaluation engineering experience.
+ Proficient in body accuracy and related measurement equipment, fixture and part scanning.
+ Must have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to act as a representative of North America R&D to Toyota Manufacturing Centers, manufacturing, affiliates, and suppliers.
+ Cost and Budget experience through Ringi Planning and creation.
+ Completed Toyota Business Plan (TBP) through Panel.
