Airport Environmental/Sustainability Intern - Spring 2026
Job Description:
This job is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period. Incumbents may deal with confidential information, which is expected to be maintained as confidential and shared only on a need-to-know basis with city employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s city supervisor.
About the Position:
The Salt Lake City Department of Airports is seeking an Environmental/Sustainability Intern for Spring 2026! In this role, you’ll play a hands-on part in shaping the airport’s commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future. You’ll gain real-world experience supporting environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and emissions reduction programs at one of the nation’s leading airports. From assisting with inspections and permits to contributing to greenhouse gas reporting, recycling efforts, and sustainability communications, you’ll be part of a team driving meaningful environmental impact. This internship is an exciting opportunity for students passionate about sustainability, environmental science, or engineering to apply their knowledge in a dynamic, real-world setting.
Internship Period: January – April 2026Schedule: Part-time (approximately 20 hours per week), with flexibility based on the student’s class schedule.Work Hours: Between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM
Position Hourly Wage:
$19.00/hr
Key Responsibilities:
+ Assist department personnel in providing technical support and ownership of environmental programs including NPDES, SPCC, greenhouse gas emissions, waste disposal, remediation, recycling and environmental training and communication.
+ Assist department personnel in performing inspections related to environmental compliance.
+ Assist in the environmental permitting process.
+ Learn applicable environmental regulations and requirements.
+ Support the execution of the company’s sustainability strategy while ensuring alignment with the overall business goals, mission, vision and values.
+ Support the development and delivery of the company’s annual Sustainability Report in alignment with sustainability standards, industry best practices and stakeholder expectations.
+ Support emissions accounting for emissions inventory and Scopes 1, 2 and 3, in line with Airport Carbon Accreditation.
+ Other tasks as assigned and as based on student’s background, academic goals, and interests.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, though summer internships may not require concurrent enrollment if student is in good standing with the educational institution.
+ Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
+ Must have good organizational and analytical skills.
+ Must have good computer skills.
Desired Qualifications:
+ Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
Working Conditions:
+ Moderate physical effort, comfortable working conditions, and handling of light weights. Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking may be required. Subject to extended exposure to computer visual display terminals
