    Position overview:

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), a Directorate of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, and a national user facility, seeks an Associate Staff Scientist to take a leading role in the development and support of user operations for sample delivery methods and systems compatible with superconducting XFEL experiments in the soft X-ray regime (RIXS, TMO, TXI instruments) as well as those at the ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) instrument (e.g. high vacuum, small sample penetration depths).

The Associate Staff Scientist will contribute to user support activities primarily at the chemRIXS instruments and the UED instrument, where they will develop, optimize, and construct advanced sample delivery systems in-house and work towards standardization and automation of processes and equipment such that new and experienced users can reliably support and execute their experiments. The candidate will work with the Sample Environment and Delivery team on developments to enable compatibility with these techniques for current normal-conducting commissioning and develop for super conducting science. The candidate will work on operation improvements on liquid sheets needed by the scientific community, as well as improvements to sample recirculation techniques and diagnostics in order to permit more precious samples and expand the existing scientific communities at resident instruments.

This role involves close collaboration with internal staff and external user groups, supporting experiment planning and execution while also driving technical innovation to enhance LCLS¿s experimental capabilities. The dissemination of scientific outcomes through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences is expected. The work will be performed as part of a collaborative team of scientists at SLAC and partner institutions.
