    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    Position Details

The Department of Civil Engineering at The City College of New York (CCNY) invites applications and nominations for a Professor of Civil Engineering to serve as Director of the Urban Waste Resource Recovery Research Institute (UWRRRI). We seek a visionary researcher and leader committed to advancing environmental sustainability, urban infrastructure resilience, and integrated waste management in support of New York City's long-term strategic goals.

The Director will lead the Urban Waste Resource Recovery Research Institute in addressing critical urban challenges through applied research, innovation, and workforce development. Areas of focus include:

+ Fundamental research in urban wastewater treatment and biosolids management

+ Co-digestion with food waste approaching a circular economic model

+ Resource recovery with emphasis on energy and valorization of treatment by products

+ Greenhouse gases (GHG), methane and nitrous oxide, mitigation

+ Coastal resiliency and climate adaptation strategies

The Institute plays a central role in research and development efforts that align with the long-term strategic initiatives of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Currently serving as the central hub for NYCDEP, the Institute is planning to expand its network of collaborative “spokes” including Columbia University, New York University, and CUNY Colleges, along with additional diverse public and private entities.

A central focus is the creation of a translational testbed—modeled after successful initiatives such as the Harlem Biospace—to accelerate the deployment of innovations relevant to DEP’s mission. This testbed will serve as a dynamic platform for:

    + Engaging industry and end-users in validating and adopting new technologies;

+ Establishing pathways for workforce development, addressing the staffing needs of municipal and related agencies; and

+ Identifying funding partners to support long-term sustainability and expansion.

Through this initiative, the Director will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Institute’s capacity for applied research, professional training, and stakeholder engagement—ultimately elevating its visibility and impact across the City and beyond.

    Key Responsibilities

+ Provide strategic leadership to expand the scope and impact of the Institute’s research agenda.

+ Align research and development priorities with the long-term goals of DEP and other City agencies.

+ Lead multi-scale investigations: laboratory, pilot-scale, full-scale, and computational modeling.

+ Foster innovations in process densification and intensification technologies.

+ Expand funding streams by building new partnerships and securing research and workforce development grants.

+ Participate in the curriculum of the Department but primarily in the Environmental Engineering program, undergraduate and graduate.

+ Develop training programs for professionals and help build a technically skilled workforce for City agencies.

+ Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI-ML) in process and staff systems of agencies to augment capabilities

+ Serve as a spokesman for the Institute, promoting its vision and expanding its network and visibility.

    QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field is required.

    Preferred Qualification:

+ A strong record of research, funding, and leadership in waste resource recovery, wastewater or solid waste treatment, or environmental infrastructure.

+ Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and manage large-scale research initiatives.

+ Proven success in securing external funding from government, industry, or foundations. Additional to the qualifications listed above, there is a preference for candidates who hold a Professional license in New York State, possess experience working with municipal agencies such as DEP or equivalent, possess expertise in workforce development, training programs, or professional education, and have familiarity with NYC environmental policy landscape and infrastructure challenges.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work Full-time in the United States.

    COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $122,201 - $155,388.Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Salaries above the contractual base are available commensurate with experience per the PSC-CUNY contract.
