    Job Overview

     

    + The Business Banking Relationship Manager (BRM) is a key leadership role in the Business Banking Department responsible for managing relationships with NJEDA's lending partners, small businesses, and stakeholders, and driving business development efforts to expand the impact of NJEDA’s loan products.

    + The BRM will have direct responsibility for originating and managing loans ranging from $500,000 to $5 million and bond financing, while leading targeted initiatives and outreach activities to meet annual business development targets.

    + The role emphasizes strategic leadership in building partnerships, advancing NJEDA’s business development efforts, and maintaining the department’s competitiveness in the financial services sector. The position also plays a critical role in marketing and promoting NJEDA’s small business financing and grant products to ensure equitable access to capital and support sustainable lending through revenue generation.

    Responsibilities

    Duties

    Daily Tasks and Responsibilities:

    + Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders, including banks, local governments, and small business community organizations.

    + Originate and manage loans ranging from $500K to $5M and bond financing requests ensuring compliance with all requirements and meeting loan origination targets.

    + Track and report on business development activities, maintain and update data within CRM systems and meet key performance indicators (KPIs) for loan origination and stakeholder engagement.

    + Engage in direct sales, focusing on developing new relationships with commercial prospects, center of influences, and refer a range of NJEDA financial products and services.

    + Ensure the loan pipeline is consistently filled, contribute to department business development goals, present and prepare management reports summarizing loan activity. Efficiently present loan and grant applications, as well as the referral pipeline, during regular team meetings.

    Projects:

    + Lead targeted business development initiatives and engagement campaigns to promote NJEDA’s loan, bond, and grant products across New Jersey.

    + Oversee the management of specific initiatives such as Premier Lender Relations, Non-Profit & Community Partner Engagement, and Bond Financing & Large Capital Projects.

    + Coordinate and manage outreach activities with an emphasis on targeted public speaking events and panels to enhance NJEDA’s visibility and industry standing.

    + Assist in developing and mentoring junior team members while providing leadership in ensuring operational efficiency and service excellence.

    + Participate in new product development and present initiatives to NJEDA board.

    Goals and Objectives:

    + Originate a minimum volume of loans and bonds annually, in alignment with the Business Banking Department’s plan, through proactive business development efforts and strategic relationship management.

    + Maintain a defined number of active strategic partnerships with lenders, community organizations, and other stakeholders.

    + Conduct a minimum number of monthly meetings with small businesses and lenders; efficiently assess client needs and refer them to appropriate NJEDA products and services

    + Participate in a minimum number of targeted public speaking engagements per year (e.g., panels, presentations, speaking engagements, roundtables).

    + Focus targeted outreach and engagement efforts within assigned territory, ensuring measurable results and impact in that specific region.

    + Manage the client pipeline effectively and ensure ongoing client satisfaction, fostering long-term relationships and business growth.

    Collaboration and Cross-Divisional Interaction:

    + Collaborate closely with the Product Strategy, Outreach, & Administration team and department leadership to coordinate efforts in promoting and delivering NJEDA's loan products.

    + Engage with internal teams, leadership, and external stakeholders to align departmental goals and ensure NJEDA’s business development efforts are targeted and effective.

    + Act as a liaison between business partners and NJEDA to ensure that all initiatives are implemented smoothly and according to plan.

    Reporting Structure:

    + Reports to: Director, Business Banking

    + The role requires a high level of autonomy and independence to execute business development efforts while reporting on key performance metrics.

    + Must complete annual self-assessment as required.

    + Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Skills and Qualifications

    Technical Skills:

    + Proficient knowledge in lending products, including SBA, CDFI, bond financing, and other financing tools. Effective communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to communicate with all levels of business professionals and NJEDA staff and deliver presentations as needed.

    + Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess client financial needs, financial statements (income, balance sheet, cash flow, personal net worth statements, and tax returns) and calculate debt services. Knowledge of collateral, term sheets, repayment schedules, and loan covenants. Skilled in applying sound lending and underwriting principles, adhering to detailed standard operating procedures.

    + Proficient in prioritizing work, managing competing priorities with attention to detail, and maintaining organizational skills to handle various tasks simultaneously under minimal supervision and time constraints. Ability to adapt to changes in work environment and multi-task between selling products and managing business relationships. Experienced in using CRM systems and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

    Soft Skills:

    + Strong leadership and mentorship abilities. Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain long-term business relationships. Works effectively across departments (legal, underwriting, compliance, operations) and with external stakeholders.

    + Adaptable to fast-paced environments; skilled at managing multiple projects with competing priorities. Efficiently prioritize tasks and manage deadlines across multiple deals and stakeholders. Committed to collaborative problem-solving. Self-motivated with the ability to self-lead work planning and execution with a results-oriented approach. Follows through on initiatives with minimal supervision and consistently delivers high-quality results.

    + Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to interface effectively with a broad range of audiences, including government officials, business, industry partners, and individual customers or applicants. Proven ability to maintain a strong pipeline of activity and ensure a steady stream of product applications. Strong negotiating, presentation/public speaking, and business writing skills.

    Certifications:

    + Certification in commercial credit and business relationship management desired but required. Other industry-specific certifications are a plus.

    Experience:

    + A minimum of seven years of business development experience, preferably in banking, finance, or economic development, with a focus on customer-facing roles in selling financial products or services

    + Proven success in originating and managing high-value loans and driving business development initiatives.

    + Experience in working with credit reports, loan underwriters, reviewing documents related to a loan, financial reports, and ability to perform various analysis like debt service coverage ratios

    + Strong relationship management skills, with experience working with banks, CDFIs, MDIs, and other industry stakeholders

    + At least five years of supervisory or leadership experience.

    + Demonstrated success in managing complex lending portfolios and driving business development goals

    + Advanced degree or industry specific certification may be substituted for 1 year of experience

    Education:

    + Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration and/or equivalent professional experience.

    Software/Tools Proficiency:

    + NJEDA utilizes Microsoft as the core application platform and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.

    + Ability to learn new software packages

    Certificates and Licenses Required

     

    + Staff are required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essentials duties of the position.
