    Description

    We are in need of bringing on a Lead Mechanical Engineer who will be responsible for owning mechanical design and delivery for rugged, outdoor imaging platforms (e.g., large-format motion systems and field-deployable camera units). Moving designs from concept → prototype → supplier handoff → on-site assembly/validation.

     

    Architect and model mechanical subsystems and weatherable enclosures; produce build-ready drawings and BOMs.

     

    Choose components, source/new suppliers, drive DFM and design-for-serviceability.

     

    Build or direct rapid prototypes; perform quick “sanity-check” analyses (heavy FEA not required).

     

    Coordinate cross-discipline integration (mounting, harness paths, thermal & access).

     

    Keep interns and day-to-day tasks moving when the manager is out; communicate status clearly.

     

    Limited field/onsite validation (mostly local; occasional short travel).

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    Work with engineering director to develop system-level mechanical architecture

    • Design motion systems including servo motors, gearboxes, linear guides, and power transmission

    • Create enclosure designs for harsh outdoor environments (waterproofing, corrosion resistance, thermal management)

    • Specify custom cables and harnesses for environmental durability

    • Source suppliers and conduct technical negotiations

    • Coordinate with contract manufacturers and implement DFM improvements

    • Produce manufacturing drawings with proper GD&T

    • Provide prototyping support and assist with on-site system deployment

    • Help establish and improve development workflows and processes

    • Collaborate across engineering disciplines to ensure seamless system integration

    Expert-level 3D CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Onshape, or equivalent)

    • Strong understanding of CAD assembly management best practices and PDM/PLM workflows

    • Experience creating manufacturing drawings with proper tolerancing and GD&T

    • Hands-on experience with motion systems: motors, gearboxes, bearings, linear actuators

    • Experience in ruggedized/outdoor equipment design

    • Proven supplier and contract manufacturer management experience

    • Solid understanding of machine shop fundamentals and fabrication processes

    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

    • Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration

    • Comfortable with hands-on prototyping and debugging

    Strongly Preferred Experience (need depth in at least 2-3 areas):

    • Hardware startup or fast-paced R&D environment experience

    • Full product development ownership from concept to production

    • Industrial automation or agricultural equipment

    • Custom cable/harness specification and environmental sealing expertise

    • High-volume DFM and design for serviceability

    • Experience implementing or improving engineering workflows and best practices

    The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $80.00/hr.
