    We are seeking a Software Engineer to drive the next generation of scalable, resilient, and performant backend systems at Microsoft. This role is ideal for a backend-focused engineer with deep experience in .NET/C#, distributed systems, and enterprise-scale commerce platforms. You will architect and build robust services powering pricing, cart, and checkout experiences while ensuring reliability, observability, and compliance at scale.

     

    Our team sits within Marketing but plays a unique role as the bridge between business needs and modern engineering practices—shaping how Microsoft delivers next-generation web and commerce experiences. We focus on transforming our marketing and product websites into performant, scalable platforms that enable seamless cart and checkout journeys, while leveraging modern web frameworks, reusable component libraries, and AI-driven automation to drive measurable efficiency and revenue gains.

     

    The **Senior Software Engineer – Frontend Platform & Commerce Experiences** role will be central to this transformation. As a hands-on engineer, you will modernize and scale web experiences across multiple properties, drive adoption of web components from our Reimagine design system, and extend that library to power dynamic, enterprise-grade shopping and checkout flows. Beyond hands-on development, you’ll influence architecture, improve developer efficiency through shared tooling and governance, and ensure quality at scale by reviewing pull requests and mentoring vendor engineering teams.

    Responsibilities

    + Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services in .NET/C# for pricing, cart, and checkout workflows.

    + Implement APIs and microservices that integrate with enterprise commerce and catalog systems.

    + Ensure availability and performance through efficient code, caching, and fault-tolerant design.

    + Establish and maintain robust backend monitoring, logging, and telemetry pipelines.

    + Review and validate vendor or partner-delivered code for quality, performance, and compliance.

    + Guide teams on practices for backend architecture, observability, and cloud-native services.

    + Integrate with enterprise commerce platforms, payment gateways, and customer identity services.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR equivalent experience.

    + 4+ years of frontend development experience with Web Components, TypeScript, JavaScript, and CSS.

    + 2+ years of demonstrated experience working with front enddesign systems(e.g. - Fluent, Material, Spectrum), Theming frameworks (e.g. - CSS variables,Sass, Tailwind), and reusable component libraries.

    + 2+ years of experience delivering commerce-related UI features such as pricing displays, cart interactions, and checkout flows.

    Other Requirements:

    Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

     

    + **Microsoft Cloud Background Check: ** This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    + OR equivalent experience.

    + Experience implementing Figma-based designs, ensuring pixel-perfect execution and fidelity to design intent.

    + Experience building or contributing to enterprise design systems or component libraries.

    + Familiarity with commerce platforms, payment integrations, or transactional workflows.

     

    Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
