Position Description
The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is seeking an Engineer 1-CHYM (Choose How You Move). The incumbent will be responsible for activities involved in the development of plans, specifications, construction, and cost estimates for complete streets and traffic signal projects initiated by NDOT as part of the CHYM Program. This position will work in a team setting where collaboration is key. The position will work with technical experts to ensure complex projects are delivered in accordance with program goals. Performs related duties as required.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.
Typical Duties
+ Designs, prepares, reviews, and/or revises plans and specifications for complete street and traffic signal projects.
+ Prepares and reviews cost estimates for projects.
+ Compiles and analyzes data for project feasibility studies.
+ Performs on-site inspections of projects.
+ Reviews final "as-built" plans and specifications.
+ May serve as a project manager for complete street and traffic signal projects.
+ Coordinates activities with other departments, government agencies, or private firms concerning.
+ Prepares and reviews technical reports and correspondences.
+ Attends various meetings.
+ Oversees federal grant application for the project.
+ Compiles and prepares data for project bids.
+ Oversees acquisition and easements of property for projects.
+ Consults and advises contractors on interpretation and enforcement of construction contract provisions.
+ Confers with contractors and makes final inspections of project.
+ Approves final payment for services.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university, Professional Engineering License, and four (4) years of post-degree engineering experience.
OR
Professional Engineering License and four (4) years of engineering experience.
NOTE: A Professional Engineering License from any state is required to apply for this position however, a Tennessee Professional Engineering License must be obtained prior to completion of the six-month probationary period.
License Requirement:

Professional Engineer’s License
Failure to obtain the Tennessee Professional Engineering License will terminate employment.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of the current principles used in the area of complete street and traffic signal design and delivery
+ Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations affecting complete street and traffic signal projects
+ Understanding of legal terminology used in construction documents
+ Proficiency with construction estimating and surveying procedures
+ Working knowledge of construction contract administration
+ Experience reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications
