    THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services at Clarks Summit State Hospital is on the lookout for skilled mechanical professionals to enhance our Facility Services team, specifically within the Boiler Plant Operator division. If you have the necessary trade skills to support our dedicated group of Facility Services Utility Plant Operators, we want to hear from you. We are currently seeking a highly qualified individual to take on the role of Utility Plant Operator 1, where you will be tasked with managing our state-of-the-art boiler plant, which has recently undergone over $4.2 million in renovations. This role demands a mechanically adept, self-driven, and independent thinker who can effectively tackle various assignments. Do not miss this opportunity—apply today!

    DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The position entails the operation and maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment to ensure optimal steam pressure and water levels within a generating plant. Responsibilities include meticulously recording steam production and fuel consumption, performing minor adjustments and repairs on boilers and associated equipment, and monitoring the boiler plant systems to identify and report potential issues. Additionally, the role involves operating small steam engines with low horsepower that drive fans and other related equipment within the boiler plant. Flexibility in work shifts is required to meet operational demands.

Operators are expected to read gauges on control panels and water level indicators for the boilers, conduct regular inspections, perform water tests, and manage the filling of water softeners with salt. They are also responsible for adding chemicals to the boiler plant's water treatment tanks and handling the movement of boiler valves for maintenance or replacement. Responding promptly to low water alarms and detecting any irregularities in the operation of motors and equipment is crucial. Minor repairs on plant equipment, lubrication, and taking water samples are part of the daily tasks, along with documenting water test results, oil and gas data, steam usage, and pressure in the boiler room logs. Preventative maintenance is essential for the boiler plant and steam utility tunnels, which includes the upkeep of boilers, auxiliary equipment, and the facility itself through cleaning and painting.

Communication is key in this role, as instructions and information are received through various channels such as telephones, pagers, cellular devices, computers, and public address systems. The ability to comprehend written communications, including policies, procedures, memos, manuals, product safety data sheets, equipment operating instructions, and boiler room charts for steam production and water flow, is essential for effective performance.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the position may require covering work hours beyond the regular schedule to ensure adequate staffing. Based on the operational needs of the maintenance area, other duties may include groundskeeping tasks such as maintaining clean outdoor areas by picking up trash and clearing leaves, as well as operating mechanized and motorized groundskeeping equipment. The role may also involve assisting tradesmen in constructing wooden structures, moving furniture, utilizing power tools, and operating a light truck for transporting personnel and materials.
