The Director of Rugby provides strategic leadership and daily management of the rugby programs at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU). This full-time role serves as Head Coach for the SJU men’s rugby club team, oversees the CSB women’s rugby program, and supervises assistant and stipend-based coaches. The Director develops competitive programs rooted in Benedictine values of community, integrity, and respect, while fostering personal growth, academic achievement, and athletic excellence. In addition, the Director strengthens the visibility and impact of rugby across both campuses through student-athlete mentorship, alumni engagement, fundraising, and collaboration with institutional partners.
All athletic department staff are required to follow the philosophies and guidelines of intercollegiate athletics in alignment with the educational mission of CSB, the MIAC, and the NCAA.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.
Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities will be shared among the two programs with approximately 85% of time supporting SJU and 15% supporting CSB.
Program Leadership & Coaching
+ As Head Coach, lead all aspects of the SJU men’s rugby club team, including training, competition strategy, and player development.
+ Supervise the head coach of the CSB women’s rugby program and oversee coaching staff across both institutions.
+ Design and implement cohesive practice plans and competitive strategies aligned with club, campus, and national standards.
+ Promote sportsmanship, inclusivity, and high standards of conduct among athletes and coaches.
Program Development & Strategic Vision
+ Develop and execute a long-term plan for sustaining competitive success across both programs.
+ Organize and lead the annual summer Rugby Pro Skills Camp hosted at SJU for high school athletes, following all guidelines and policies for camps as directed by university administration.
+ Integrate rugby into broader campus life, which may include teaching a rugby-related course if applicable.
Recruitment & Retention
+ Recruit talented high school rugby athletes domestically and internationally, and attain goals set in partnership with athletic and university administration
+ Build strong relationships with recruits, families, high school/club coaches, and admissions teams.
+ Track recruitment strategy and success by partnering with admission team using available CRM software (Slate).
+ Maintain rosters that support both participation and competitive excellence at CSB and SJU.
+ Collaborate with campus partners to promote student-athlete retention and academic success.
Student-Athlete Development
+ Foster a culture that supports student-athletes in balancing academic, athletic, and personal commitments.
+ Create an inclusive, respectful, and growth-oriented team environment.
+ Monitor academic progress and well-being in coordination with campus resources.
Program Administration
+ Manage program budgets, coordinate team travel, equipment, uniforms, and facility use.
+ Maintain records in compliance with institutional and league requirements.
+ Supervise and mentor assistant/stipend coaches for both programs.
+ Ensure consistent coaching philosophies and best practices across teams.
Compliance & Institutional Standards
+ Ensure compliance with CSB/SJU club sport policies and national governing bodies (e.g., USA Rugby).
+ Uphold institutional values and codes of conduct.
+ Represent both programs with professionalism on and off the field.
Alumni & Community Engagement
+ Engage with rugby alumni to foster mentorship, fundraising, and continued program support.
+ Promote rugby visibility on campus and in the community through events and partnerships.
+ Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts within the athletics department and student body.
Other Duties
+ Participate in departmental, campus, and regional meetings or initiatives.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
+ Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
+ Minimum 3 years of collegiate coaching or equivalent playing/coaching experience.
+ Level 3 World Rugby coaching certification or equivalent highly preferred.
+ Demonstrated success in recruitment and athlete development.
+ Strong knowledge of rugby rules, strategies, and techniques
+ Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
+ Proven ability to lead and manage multiple teams, coaches, and logistics.
+ Experience fostering inclusive and respectful team environments.
+ Ability to positively represent the program to internal and external stakeholders
+ Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of student-athletes, faculty, staff, and community members
+ Commitment to student-athlete development, academic success, and program integrity
+ Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
+ Hold CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications per NCAA rules, or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire
+ Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the college’s vehicle use requirements, including completion of a defensive driving course within one month of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
+ Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including leading student-athletes through training sessions and demonstrating techniques and skills.
+ Ability to move throughout campus facilities and indoor/outdoor competition venues.
+ Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.
+ Ability to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
+ Regular travel for team competition, recruitment, and camp operations.
+ Occasional travel between CSB and SJU campuses and other recruiting events.

HEALTH INSURANCE
Employees are eligible for coverage in the health insurance plan on the first of the month following date of hire. If you elect medical coverage for yourself, you may also choose to cover your eligible dependents. The employee and CSB/SJU share in the cost of this benefit.
DENTAL INSURANCE
Employees are eligible for coverage in the dental insurance plan on the first of the month following date of hire. If you elect dental coverage for yourself, you may also choose to cover your eligible dependents. The employee and CSB/SJU share in the cost of this benefit.
LIFE INSURANCE
CSB/SJU provides a Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance is effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance provided is based on your annual salary.
You may also purchase additional life insurance in increments of one, two, three, or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY
After one year of benefit eligible employment, CSB/SJU provides disability coverage in the event of an illness or injury that prevents you from working.
VACATION
Paid vacation is accrued based upon FTE and the number of years employed. Vacation is cumulative from year to year to a maximum of 240 hours.

These plans allow employees to set aside part of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses.
VISION PLAN
This voluntary plan offers affordable vision coverage for routine eye exams, eyeglass lenses and frames, and contact lenses. Discounts on hearing exams and hearing aids are also included.
TUITION REMISSION
Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by CSB/SJU. A full-time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free educational benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. Full time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer: up to a maximum of 2 courses per year.
There is also a tuition remission program for dependent children of full-time employees. This program provides a financial resource to a son or daughter for meeting the tuition costs of undergraduate education. Eligibility begins the fall or spring semester following 2 years (24 months) of continuous full-time employment. There are also two consortia programs in which CSB/SJU participate where employees' children may apply for scholarships to attend other colleges/universities.
Tuition assistance is also available at Saint John's Preparatory School for the dependents of full-time employees.
PARENTAL LEAVE
A paid leave (up to 15 days) will be granted to eligible employees upon the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment.
SICK LEAVE
Full-time employees earn up to 9 days of sick leave per year, pro-rated based on FTE.
Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may also use accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members.
EMPLOYEEASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free counseling resource available to
all employees and immediate family members.
RETIREMENT
Defined Contribution Plan
CSB/SJU provides a retirement program for all qualified full-time employees. The program is administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA).
Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following the date of hire unless the employee elects to opt-out.
