    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    VISION FOR POSITION

    This teammate closes the opportunity gap for our students by ensuring that they have the necessary skills and resources to be successful in the classroom, and then stepping in to teach and practice those skills when students present that need. This teammate is keenly aware of all students' behaviors and intensely focused on each student's growth. They are committed to responding to behaviors in a loving, structured way that is rooted in trauma-informed, restorative practices and maintains high expectations for behavior and learning. This teammate must commit to partnering regularly with families to problem solve, with the shared goal of increasing a student's learning and growth in social-emotional skills and academics. This teammate will report to the Assistant Principal of Special Education and work in close partnership with members of the school leadership, special education, and teaching teams. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is energized by challenging work, hungry for collaboration and feedback, and is able to work across lines of difference with a sensitivity to diversity and inclusiveness.

    Special Education Teacher / Behavior Interventionist (Grades 4-8) POSITION FUNCTIONS Instruction

    + Provides high-quality, evidence-based instruction aligned to students' IEP goals in social skills, self-management, executive functioning, and emotional regulation.

    + Teaches small-group and individual lessons using social-emotional learning curricula and behavior regulation strategies.

    + Designs and implements specialized interventions to build coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and replacement behaviors.

    + Differentiates instruction based on students' behavioral and academic data and collaborates with case managers to ensure IEP compliance.

    + Incorporates restorative practices and reflection into lessons to help students learn from missteps and re-enter classrooms ready to learn.

    + Collaborates with general education and special education teachers to integrate SEL and behavior supports into classroom routines.

    + Uses data to adjust intervention frequency, groupings, and goals based on student progress.

     

    Behavior Intervention & Restorative Support

     

    + Provides thoughtfully planned proactive, structured behavioral interventions to support students at risk for discipline referrals or removals.

    + Leads specific, planned restorative interventions emphasizing reflection, accountability, and repair of harm rather than exclusion.

    + Partners with school leaders, student support, and special education staff to prevent repeated incidents and maintain a positive school climate.

    + Implements and monitors individual behavior intervention plans, progress charts, and tiered interventions (MTSS).

    + Models de-escalation techniques and self-regulation strategies for students and staff.

    + Collaborates on disciplinary decisions, always centering equitable, restorative approaches.

    + Serves as a member of the student crisis response team and supports implementation of crisis plans when needed.

     

    Data Analysis

     

    + Sets and tracks ambitious behavior and academic growth goals; measures success by increased student engagement in learning.

    + Collects and analyzes data on referrals, restorative interventions, IEP goal progress, and student self-regulation growth.

    + Shares data regularly with instructional leaders and the IEP team to inform decision-making and support early intervention.

    + Develops and updates data-driven plans every six weeks for small groups and individual students.

     

    Collaboration & Professional Development

     

    + Actively collaborates with the school leadership team, student support team, special education team, and classroom teachers to ensure cohesive behavioral and academic supports.

    + Participates in professional development focused on restorative practices, social-emotional learning, and behavior intervention.

    + Attends coaching meetings, implements feedback, and follows through on professional growth goals.

    + Contributes to staff learning by modeling restorative conversations and proactive behavior supports.

     

    Relationships & Communication

     

    + Builds strong, trusting relationships with students, staff, and families grounded in empathy and accountability.

    + Communicates regularly with families regarding student progress, interventions, and behavior incidents.

    + Facilitates re-entry, restorative, and problem-solving meetings with students, families, and teachers.

    + Maintains professionalism and clear, timely communication (responds to email, phone, and messages within 24 business hours).

    + Demonstrates warmth, positivity, and respect for all members of the school community.

    SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS, DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS General Requirements

    + Preferred:

    + BA/BS degree

    + MN Special Education teaching license

    + Other Desired:

    + Experience in special education and working with students with disabilities

    + Experience in behavior management techniques

    + Working knowledge of multiple disabilities

    + Experience in collecting and responding to data

    + Knowledge and application of assessment tools and data management

    + Experience related to students who have experienced trauma

    + Knowledge and application of trauma-informed practices

    + Knowledge and application of the restorative justice approach

    + Training in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or Trauma Informed Care (TCI) de-escalation techniques

    Knowledge & Skills

    + Outstanding attention to detail and willingness to get the job done

    + Excellent organizational, planning, and implementation skills

    + Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple stakeholders, including parents, teachers, leaders, and students

    + Able to multitask and work in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment

    + Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc.)
