    Position Description:

The University of Washington's Department of Chemistry and the Science and Technology Center for Integration of Modern Optoelectronic Materials on Demand (IMOD, imod-stc.org) are seeking applications for a Director of Education and Workforce Development (D-EWD). In this full-time position, the D-EWD will support Center integrative activities (e.g., research, education and human resource development, broadening participation, knowledge transfer) and has primary responsibility for envisioning, organizing, developing, and delivering educational and human resource development activities for the entire center across all partnering institutions.

IMOD aims to transform conventional and quantum optoelectronics through the development of materials and processes. The D-EWD will help to innovate and implement educational programming to educate a new generation of scientists and engineers, through organizing and delivering professional development activities and content to undergraduate, PhD, and postdoctoral trainees. The D-EWD reports to the Center Director, Deputy Director, Associate Director of Workforce Development, and to the IMOD Managing Director who will serve as the candidate’s immediate supervisor. The D-EWD works closely with IMOD’s Director for Center Integration and Workforce Recruitment (D-CIWR) on Center programming to enrich the trainees’ and partners’ experiences. The D-EWD is responsible for the overall direction of educational programming in IMOD, including regular participation in Center planning and strategy meetings, operations, and has a supervisory responsibility for 1-2 students or postdoctoral scholars serving as IMOD Education Fellows, as well as nearly 2 dozen students and postdoctoral scholars serving as Quantum LEAP Ambassadors. This description is a summary of the position and describes the general level of work being performed – it is not intended to be all-inclusive. The duties of this position may change from time to time and/or based on business need. We reserve the right to add or delete duties and responsibilities at the discretion of the supervisor and/or hiring authority.

    Position Complexities:

The position involves planning, implementing, and leading Education and Workforce Development programming across a multi-institutional NSF Science and Technology center comprising geographically dispersed faculty, students, staff, and postdocs specializing in many different science and engineering disciplines. Some content already developed is aimed at STEM outreach for K-12 students, while other content such as lab modules has been developed for graduate and undergraduate students learning quantum information science and atomically precise chemical synthesis. The position requires maintaining and building personal relationships with stakeholders as diverse as research faculty, K-12 teachers, entrepreneurs, industrial, and national laboratory partners. The position requires an understanding of program evaluation, aiding in the design of program evaluation elements, and work with the external evaluation team to design and utilize program evaluation materials. The position demands extensive and complex federal reporting across multiple task areas, including collecting and preparing key sections of a multi-hundred page annual report, preparing and delivering presentations to external faculty and NSF review panels, as well as the STC’s External Advisory Committee (EAC). It requires expertise and balancing of college level science, as well as K-12 pedagogy, US Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and National Science Board recommendations for best practices in student mentoring and training. It also requires time management, planning, and supervisory skills, to manage and organize complex events such as professional development program sessions, and a week-long in person training course for 30+ trainees.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will spearhead IMOD’s Quantum Workforce Development efforts and manage all aspects of IMOD’s EWD program with strategic, high-level guidance from the Director.
