Job Summary
Direct/Manage/Supervise tax planning strategies for the organization. Ensure tax policies and procedures support the organization’s governance and business objectives. Oversee all state and local compliance, calculations, and filings. Liaise with external auditors/tax planners and internal accounting department regarding tax reporting matters. Lead tax department internal controls processes and research issues and changes in applicable tax law and its impact on the organization. Provide guidance to finance leaders to manage risk and support growth. Coordinate and leads daily team activities. May spend a portion of time performing the work of those they supervise. Assist with management decisions and activities. Working knowledge of team function within the organization.

Responsibilities
* Reviews and approves state payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and amendments.
* Manages annual year-end payroll tax processing and W-2 submissions to state agencies.
* Oversees accurate withholding calculation, reporting, and remittance of state income taxes, including adjustments and overpayments.
* Prepares management reports on reconciliations of payroll tax accounts to the general ledger.
* Supervises payroll accounting staff and provide training and guidance.
* Participates in university-wide committees to establish customer service standards and administrative plans and policies.
* Maintains customer satisfaction by addressing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing follow-through.
Problem Solving
* Often selects from a predetermined list of alternatives and sometimes recommends or changes policy and procedure based upon amount of discretion given by department.
* Problems would be referred to superior based upon predetermined guidelines set by the department.

Minimum Qualifications
**EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT :** 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
Preferences
* Master’s degree in accounting.
* A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with up to 2 years of directly related work experience, or a master’s degree (or equivalent).
* CPA license is strongly preferred. Candidates who are CPA -eligible, per the State of Utah Division of Professional Licensing rules, and are willing to sit for the exams may be considered.
* Prior experience in preparing and reviewing IRS tax returns for a college, university, or non-profit.
* Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
