    Job Summary

    Nuclear Dosimetry Science Technician I

     

    This is an entry-level position. This position will collect, prepare, process, calibrate, and analyze data associated with TLDs and SRDs to support the fleet nuclear dosimetry programs. Receives and processes routine or special dosimetry TLDs or SRDs to be inspected, calibrated, processed and data analyzed. Prepares and analyzes reports and data using highly specialized instruments, equipment, software and work process procedures. Utilizes various technologies to compile, manipulate, analyze, maintain data, and generate reports. Operates, calibrates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs various pieces of equipment. This position will be trained to operate DOC dosimetry software program, Sample Manager, Mirion calibration software program and Sentinel software program. The equipment/instruments, analysis, and software will vary from simple to highly sophisticated and complex. The majority of work must be performed in strict compliance with procedures, standards, and regulatory requirements and is subject to audit by company, state, or federal auditors.

     

    This position will be part of a small team that shares responsibility for managing the Harshaw thermoluminescent dosimeter/dosimeter of legal record (TLD/DLR) program and the self-reading electronic dosimeter (SRD) program for the nuclear fleet. This position will have lead dosimetry responsibility for at least one nuclear site. Specific daily duties may vary depending upon need. The successful candidate will perform various functions in a laboratory, potentially requiring work for prolonged periods in laboratory, environmental or nuclear plant conditions.

     

    This work must be performed in accordance to set procedures, National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation (NVLAP) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory requirements and is subject to audits by company or regulatory (State / Federal) auditors.

     

    This position will function in two areas of discipline: dosimetry and radiation protection.

     

    Nuclear Dosimetry Science Technician II

     

    This level requires, as a prerequisite, complete satisfactory qualification and performance as a Nuclear Dosimetry Science Technician I or equivalent skills. In addition, this position must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of the job. Individual performs all tasks and functions under general supervision. Individual is capable of completing special assignments and projects with substantial independence.

    Job Responsibilities

    + Perform routine laboratory tasks in accordance with established procedures, e.g., manage Harshaw thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD/DLR) support for at least one nuclear site, manage the self-reading electronic dosimeter (SRD) program for multiple nuclear sites and maintain detailed records and reporting of all processes

    + Perform maintenance and calibration of laboratory instrumentation and equipment

    + Operate computer hardware and software applications related to support of DLR and SRD processing and inventory management

    + Prepare whole body, extremity, and environmental calibration and QC TLD cards

    + Responsible for documentation and logging of various DLR and SRD data

    + Maintain and Update Sentinel and DOC software databases for SRDs and DLRs

    + Prepare whole body, extremity, environmental and site area TLDS for use and changeouts at the nuclear sites

    + Perform ECC acceptance testing and documentation for new DLRs, DLR cases and SRDs

    + Perform Algorithm Verifications with Battelle

    + Perform quality control/quality assurance activities as required to ensure accuracy and limits as required by established procedures

    + Operate and maintain IDC HF SRD Calibrator robot and Mirion software system

    + Operate and maintain Thermo 8800 TLD readers and DOC software system

    + Prepare and submit monthly records for archival

    + Participate in creation, review and revision of laboratory procedures

    + Participate in internal audits, NVLAP audits and various cross check programs

    + Perform routine laboratory task in accordance with established procedures for site Environmental and Area Boundary TLD program

    + Maintain NVLAP qualifications as part of the TLD/DLR program responsibilities

    + Identify, trouble shoot and resolve routine problems with acquired experience

    + Analyze statistical data to identify trends, problems or conditions adverse to quality

    + Maintenance and calibration of laboratory instrumentation and equipment

    + Review reader and instrument calibrations performed by others for accuracy and compliance with established procedures and programs.

    + Independently verify and check calculations or calibrations performed by others

    + Input computer data and generate reports in computerized files or databases ensuring information is complete and accurate

    + Maintain strong working relationship and lines of communication with the site's radiation protection, NVLAP, NRC, State regulators and other sites throughout the industry

    Basic Qualifications

    Nuclear Dosimetry Science Technician I

     

    + Associates degree in Radiological Sciences

    + In lieu of Associates degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND 2 year(s) related work experience

     

    Nuclear Dosimetry Science Technician II

     

    + Associates degree in Radiological Sciences and 2 years minimum required related work experience

    + In lieu of Associates degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND 3 year(s) related work experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Technology/Science or another scientific related field

    + 2 years of experience in external radiation dosimetry (TLD/DLR or SRD) program support

    + 2 years of experience in maintenance and calibration of laboratory instrumentation

    + Working knowledge of nuclear plant activities and processes

    + Working knowledge of Sentinel, PADS, DOC dosimetry and Mirion software

    + Demonstrated ability to work independently on projects, with little or no supervision

    + Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

    + Ability to prioritize and schedule heavy workloads to meet nuclear fleet dosimetry needs

    + Demonstrated computer application skills (Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook and Custom databases/software)

    + Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility when work plans and hours are modified, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities

    + Ability to work a varying work schedule in response to customer needs

    + Demonstrated verbatim compliance with written procedures

    + Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner

     

    Working Conditions

     

    + Exposure to radioactive materials and nuclear plant operations

    + Office, environmental and scientific laboratory environments

    + Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

    + Ability to walk prolonged periods outside in sometimes hot and cold temperatures

    + Maintain and exercise awareness of safety on the job

    + Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.

    Specific Requirements

    + Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access and nuclear security clearance

    + Occasional overtime
