Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant in Radiation Oncology plays a vital role in supporting the clinical and administrative operations of the radiation oncology department. Working closely with physicians, radiation therapists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the MA ensures efficient patient flow and provides compassionate care to individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
Job Responsibilities:
+ Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs.
+ Implements health care provider diagnostic and therapeutic orders under the direct supervision of the RN Staff Nurse
+ Administers oral medications and immunizations in accordance with physician order
+ Schedules procedures, surgeries and appointments, including preparation instructions as needed, according to protocols and physician/provider orders
+ Performs patient care by performing the following: vital signs, sub-Q injections, collecting specimens, blood draws, preparing patients as necessary, assisting health care provider with examinations and procedures
+ Accurately documents care and patient teaching provided in the patient’s medical record
+ Observes patient’s condition and reports progress and/or significant changes to physician/provider and/or RN Staff Nurse
+ Recognizes and responds appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills to identify, interpret & access appropriate resources.
+ Utilizes computer system for all patient care functions including, but not limited to: monitoring fax server, maintaining patient schedule, checking in patients & documentation of appropriate information in patient record.
+ Performs a wide variety of clerical duties including, but not limited to: processing patient documents, ordering supplies, initiation and completion of insurance verification, phone messages, obtaining outside records including storage facilities such as Underground Vaults and Storage & physician offices & testing facilities, obtaining records releases.
+ Works closely with appropriate resources, both internally & externally and with various 3rd party payors to verify patient and/or beneficiary eligibility and coverage; answers questions regarding insurance coverage.
+ Reviews with the patient and/or family member preparation instructions, date, time and location of specialist appointments and any other special instructions in preparations for upcoming consults, appointments and/or treatments.
+ Greets patients and visitors in a professional manner and assists them in locating their destination. Assist in maintaining an appealing & welcoming lobby for patients (coffee, monitoring need for housekeeping,
+ Establishes and maintains effective and respectful communication in development of all collaborative relationships
+ Monitors incoming patient referrals to assure optimal patient flow, scheduling and insurance eligibility
+ All other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
+ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) verification course through American Heart Assoc. or American Red Cross - Healthcare Provider CPR
+ Certified or Registered as a Medical Assistant
+ Demonstrates the ability to multi-task
+ Demonstrates flexibility to work in varied environments, as needed
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Previous experience in a radiology setting within a medical office or clinic
