    The University of Texas Medical Branch is seeking a visionary to pioneer the development of a comprehensive aerospace medicine research and education program. This in-person faculty position will support UTMB’s internationally recognized, ACGME-accredited Aerospace Medicine Residency programs and will serve as a bridge between clinical practice, academic research, and global aerospace medicine initiatives. The successful candidate will help position UTMB as a national leader in space health innovation through research, education, and strategic collaboration.

     

    + **Research and Scholarship**

    + Establish and lead a robust, interdisciplinary aerospace medicine research infrastructure at UTMB.

    + Design and conduct original studies in spaceflight health, aviation safety, and human performance in exploration environments.

    + Facilitate translational research by connecting clinical faculty with research teams.

    + Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across human factors, vehicle system design, and biomedical sciences to advance aerospace medicine research and risk reduction.

    + Engage with other aerospace medicine training programs to foster shared learning, joint research initiatives, and educational innovation.

    + Support residents and students in research design, grant writing, publication, and presentation.

    + Promote and participate in scholarly activities, including securing and managing research grants.

    + Contribute to divisional research efforts, including support for contracts such as the Human Health and Performance Contract 2 (HHPC-2).

    + **Educational Leadership**

    + Develop and teach courses for the Master of Science in Aerospace Medicine degree.

    + Coordinate educational activities such as didactics, journal clubs, and grand rounds.

    + Oversee divisional educational initiatives, including the Aerospace Medicine Scholarly Concentration in the John Sealy School of Medicine.

    + Integrate space health topics into existing clinical education pathways, develop and teach new curricula in aerospace medicine for graduate training.

    + Teach and mentor residents and trainees in the Aerospace Medicine Residency and related programs, with emphasis on literature appraisal and spaceflight study design.

    + Foster interdisciplinary learning and innovation across UTMB’s academic programs.

    + **Global Engagement and Strategic Collaboration**

    + Represent UTMB’s Division of Aerospace Medicine in institutional, national, and international forums (e.g., Graduate Medical Education, ACGME, ABPM, AsMA).

    + Collaborate with government, military, academic, and commercial spaceflight partners across the U.S. and globally.

    + Engage in operational and educational initiatives that advance human health in exploration environments.

    + Identify and connect faculty across UTMB and other University of Texas institutions with shared interests in aerospace-related research.

    + Build and sustain partnerships with space agencies, academic institutions, and industry leaders.

    + Serve as a liaison between clinical and research teams to promote translational impact.

    + Advance UTMB’s strategic goals in aerospace medicine through cross-sector collaboration.

    + Provide consultant expertise as needed to customers in the realm of space related research, education, risk assessment and mitigation.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    + MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field.

    + Demonstrated experience in aerospace medicine, space health, or related research.

    + Proven track record of academic scholarship and program development.

    + Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.

    + Must be a United States Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Board certification in Aerospace Medicine or related specialty for physician applicants.

    + Experience working with space agencies, aviation, military, or commercial spaceflight organizations.

    + Prior leadership in academic program development or research administration.

    + Experience with operational aerospace environments and associated human risks.

    + Strong record of scholarly activity and publication.

    SALARY:

    Commensurate with experience.
