Responsibilities
Audiology assistants work under supervision of licensed audiologists in a variety of capacities within Mayo Clinic’s audiology division. These include helping to assess hearing in young children, screening newborn babies for early signs of hearing loss, performing basic hearing assessment on adults, and stocking and maintaining patient care areas. Audiology assistants also support our hearing aid and cochlear implant practices by helping to schedule appointments, assisting with troubleshooting of devices, answering phones, ordering new devices and equipment, and collecting payments.
The current position is 0.9 FTE (36 hours/week). This time will be primarily dedicated to assisting with hearing assessments for young children and older patients who may require non-conventional test methods. This is often accomplished by teaching the patient to look towards a sound source and directing their attention forward between sounds using a variety of toys. For older children, this is accomplished by turning the assessment into a ‘game’ to keep them engaged. The assistant often adapts their strategy based on feedback from the patient, audiologist, and family.
This role also involves screening hearing of newborn babies at Methodist Hospital one day per week. Additionally, the audiology assistant will play a role in maintaining and stocking patient care areas. The role may evolve to support other specialties within audiology as the clinic grows.
The ideal candidate for this role is comfortable engaging with children, adaptable, and willing to take direction from the audiologist to ensure optimal testing outcomes. Prior experience working with children between 6 months and 5 years of age is ideal.
