Job Description

We are seeking an Enrollment Specialist who can engage patients in meaningful conversations regarding their finances and related life impacts. The role focuses on increasing health insurance coverage and access to quality primary care, dental, vision, and behavioral health services. The specialist will conduct focused outreach to educate and assist patients and community members in navigating the enrollment process for health insurance coverage, such as Medi-Cal and Covered CA, and health care assistance programs for the uninsured. Effective communication with patients, clinical and operational departments, and health insurance/health care assistance programs is essential.

Responsibilities

+ Help patients understand their insurance coverage.

+ Assist the Clinic Supervisor in conducting educational activities to raise awareness about insurance coverage options.

+ Work with patients and the billing department to create payment plans.

+ Review ongoing aging reports for patient balances over 180 days and facilitate payment through phone outreach.

+ Assist patients by phone and occasionally in person with account-related questions.

+ Navigate electronic patient portals, including Medi-Cal, Presumptive Medi-Cal, FPACT, EWC, CDP, Health Families, and Covered CA.

+ Provide benefits application assistance and follow-up to ensure patient follow-through and remove access barriers.

+ Maintain records of customer interactions, inquiries, complaints, or comments, as well as actions taken.

+ Stay informed about eligibility, enrollment, program specifications, and health center payment options to assist uninsured patients.

+ Submit monthly statistical data to the Clinic Supervisor and report owners promptly.

+ Resolve patients' service or billing inquiries.

Essential Skills

+ Customer service and call center experience.

+ Health care and health insurance knowledge.

+ Benefits and eligibility verification expertise.

+ Data entry proficiency.

+ Ability to provide enrollment assistance.

+ Understanding of patients’ basic financial problems (debt, collections, payment plans, etc.).

+ Valid CA driver's license with a clear DMV record.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.

+ Experience with NextGen software.

+ Minimum two years of experience in a medical business office, coding, or billing in a medical facility.

+ Bachelor’s degree preferred or 2-5 years of related experience in a medical field.

+ Certified Enrollment Counselor (CEC) Certification to be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained.

Work Environment

This position primarily operates from a clinic, with occasional travel to designated locations for work events such as PRIDE and Suicide Prevention. The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with occasional mandatory events during evenings and weekends. The environment is team-oriented with transparent communication and opportunities for long-term career growth.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sacramento, California.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $29.00/hr.
