    Position Description

    Primary Purpose:

    The primary purpose of a Pipeliner is to perform preventative maintenance and upgrading of pipeline and pipeline facilities, usually as a member of a crew, and to respond to emergency repairs in order to minimize down time and throughput loss.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    + General maintenance of the pipelines, including pipe fitting and equipment relocation, hot tapping, setting and removing plugs from TORs (Thread O-Rings), cold cutting, coating repairs and monitoring atmosphere using a company provided air monitor.

    + Cleans, clears vegetation around company assets and paints mainline block valves, facilities at tank farms, booster stations and Region offices.

    + Assists crew members and contractors in preparing shoring as necessary in the preparation of ditches. • May be required to operate power tools, including drills, saws, grinders, and forklifts to load and unload equipment/materials from freight trucks, etc.

    + Will need to follow company procedures to enter confined space entry and be able to perform necessary work in confined spaces.

    + Physically checks out requests related to underground service alerts (referred to as USA in California and Blue Stake Requests in Arizona for example) to determine if Company property or Right-of-Way is affected. Performs manual labor required in Right-of-Way clearance. Inspects exposed piping during line crossings to determine adequacy of protective coating.

    + May be assigned company vehicle outfitted with essential tools, materials, and equipment to perform field tasks.

    + Maintains Company assigned purchasing credit card, Wex fuel card and Travel and Entertainment card in good standing.

    + Consistently maintains and demonstrates a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.

    + Installs pipeline markers; cleans, buffs, and recoats or paints piping; maintains valves and other pipe fittings.

    + Performs minor repairs and maintenance tasks at regional offices, terminals, and remote facilities.

    + Performs housekeeping tasks including sandblasting, painting, basic carpentry, and concrete work.

    + Clears brush and vegetation around pipeline right-of-way and remote facilities.

    + Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Position Requirements

    Minimum requirements:

    Education:

    + High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience, Specific Knowledge, Certification & Licenses:

    + This is an entry level field position. Basic knowledge of pipeline construction and general mechanical and electrical maintenance preferred.

    + Work can be very manual labor intensive and involves repetitive standing, stooping, bending, squatting, walking, and lifting of weights up to 50 pounds unassisted and assistance should be sought for weight in excess of that amount. Climbing in and out of trenches, climbing tanks, working around heavy equipment, negotiating rough terrain, areas of loose rock, and working in confined spaces is required. Relies on senses of smell, hearing, and sight to identify and evaluate irregularities and malfunctions.

    + Advancement from one step level to the next is based on minimum time requirements, as well as meeting and maintaining satisfactory job performance standards.

    + A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required.

    + If applicable to the work location, satisfactorily obtaining or already possessing a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is a condition of employment. TWIC cards are obtained by submitting an application, having fingerprints taken, and undergoing a thorough background check by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA).

    + If the employee is subject to license or certification requirements or training as stipulated by local, state, or federal agencies or the Company, now or in the future, compliance is required under this job description.

    + Knowledge and experience working with construction contractors is preferred.

    + Experience in pipeline maintenance or similar is preferred.

    + Prior experience requiring mechanical aptitude and skill is a plus.

    + Basic knowledge of cathodic protection is a plus.

    + Knowledge of piping, valves and pressures is a plus.

    + Knowledge of basic pipeline operations is a plus.

    Competencies/Skills:

    + Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft applications (i.e., Word, Outlook) is necessary in order to interface with company communication systems.

    + Strong verbal and written communications skills are required. Must be able to read and comprehend written documents, instructions and directions, as well as be able to accurately pass on information and instructions to co-workers.

    + Must be accountable and take direction from Managers; keep required work schedules, which include regular and predictable job attendance; focus attention on details; follow work rules.

    + Must be able to pass Operator Qualification (OQ) training administered by supervisors and managers.

    + Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.

    + Must be a problem solver with the ability to find resolutions.

    + Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision and/or direction.

    Working Conditions / Physical Demands / Requirements:

    + Employees must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state, or federal agencies and/or Company Policy.

    + Requires stamina in order to work extended, consecutive hours which may be up to 24 hours or longer.

    + Field work may involve exposure to snakes, flying and crawling insects, extreme temperatures ranging from 20*F to 120*F, rough terrain, dusty conditions, and loud noises primarily from equipment motor and extended sun exposure.

    + Perform physical labor in a variety of extreme climactic conditions, including walking, bending, stooping, climbing tanks, digging, lifting and general manual labor.

    + Frequently may walk up to 5 - 10 miles in a day, including through brush and rugged terrain in temperatures that can range from 20 to 120 F.

    + Work is very manual labor intensive and involves and lifting of weights up to 50 pounds unassisted and assistance should be sought for weight in excess of that amount.

    + Climbing in and out of trenches, working around heavy equipment, negotiating rough terrain, areas of loose rock, and working in confined spaces is required.

    + Relies on senses of smell, hearing, and sight to identify and evaluate irregularities and malfunctions.

    + The job entails occasional callouts on a 24-hour emergency basis and an ability to work long hours, weekends, nights and holidays, when required.

    + Must carry a cell phone and respond to calls/pages in a timely manner 24/7.

    + Overtime required and extended work hours in cases of emergencies.

    + Depending upon location, extended travel on a weekly basis may be required in order to complete duties at all assignment areas. Occasional overnight travel could average 1 – 20 nights per month.

    + Must be willing and able to travel via personal vehicle and/or Company vehicle, as well as commercial airlines, as needed. Occasionally, an employee must be willing and able to cover travel expenses and is reimbursed upon submittal of approved expense reports.

    + May be required to travel or work alone (unsupervised).

    + May be exposed to smells and vapor associated with refined petroleum products.

    + Climatic conditions are determined by location assignment and may include severe seasonal changes including both winter conditions with frequent snow or extreme summer heat and sun, depending upon geographic location.

    + Well-balanced interpersonal skills. Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a team environment and consistently maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with co-workers, clients, consultants, and representatives of various local, state, federal and regulatory agencies.

    + In order to meet the various maintenance and general operational requirements, a mechanical aptitude is necessary.

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    + None.

    Compensation:

    Pay range is $29.00 to $42.00 per hour. This position includes a discretionary annual incentive plan. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.
