Description
We are looking for a Household Waste Specialist to help with collecting, sorting, and preparing chemical and electronic waste for safe disposal. This includes items from homes and small businesses. You will also help with recycling and safe document destruction. Training will be provided.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Collect, sort, and prepare household chemical and electronic waste for proper disposal or recycling.
+ Safely handle a variety of waste materials, such as:
+ Chemicals: Paints, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, flammable liquids
+ Electronics: Computers, TVs, phones, batteries, printers, and other devices
+ Other items: Fire extinguishers, cooking oil, propane tanks, fluorescent bulbs, and more
+ Transport materials using a box truck to vendors or special collection events.
+ Classify and segregate materials by hazard class (flammable, corrosive, toxic, reactive).
+ Package, label, and prepare materials for shipment following regulatory requirements.
+ Assist in recordkeeping, reporting, and preparing shipping manifests in compliance with FDEP and DOT regulations.
Education, Experience, Licensing
Education and Experience:
+ You need any combination of education and experience that is equal to:
+ High School Diploma or GED
+ 6 months of related or closely related work experience, such as in waste management, recycling operations, hazardous materials handling, environmental services, sanitation, warehouse or material handling, public works, or any role involving chemical/electronic waste, safety procedures, or operation of commercial vehicles and equipment.
+ Driver’s License:
+ Valid Florida Class “B” Commercial Learner’s Permit (required for employment).
+ Obtain a Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License within six months of hire.
+ Safety-Sensitive Position:
+ This role is safety-sensitive, meaning it is subject to Drug and Alcohol Workplace Testing as per DOT regulations (49 CFR-Parts 40 and/or 382).
Preferred Experience:
+ Our primary vehicle is a box truck; experience driving large vehicles is preferred.
+ Forklift experience is preferred.
Training & Certifications (Provided on the Job and Paid for by Employer)
To ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, you will be enrolled in the following training programs:
+ OSHA 24-Hour HAZWOPER Certification (Initial 3-day course — must pass written exam)
+ OSHA 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher (Annual — must pass written exam)
+ DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping/Manifesting Training (8-hour course — renew every 3 years)
+ Forklift Certification (renew every 3 years)
Supplemental Information
Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, and the first Saturday of each month, unless it falls on or near a holiday.
Additional Information:
Work takes place at the Household Chemical Waste (HCW) Facility and occasionally at off-site collection events.
