Job Summary
The Vice President, External Affairs & Sustainability Strategy plays a cross-functional role at the intersection of public policy, sustainability strategy, and enterprise planning. Positioned within MUFG’s Chief Financial Strategy Office (CFSO) — which helps define and drive enterprise-wide strategic direction — the role partners closely with Government & External Affairs, the Sustainability Strategy and Planning Office, and other corporate functions to translate complex policy developments into actionable business and strategic outcomes. The position will help advance MUFG’s institutional positioning on public policy and sustainability issues with direct implications for MUFG and MUFG Americas as a regulated financial institution. The VP will also contribute to executive-level engagement with key U.S. policymakers and industry stakeholders, often in coordination with MUFG’s Washington Representative Office and Tokyo Head Office.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Coordination & Execution
As a member of the Strategy Execution Team within the Chief Financial Strategy Office, the Vice President will help ensure that cross-functional initiatives connecting policy, sustainability, and strategy are well-defined, coordinated, and successfully delivered. In this capacity, the individual will:
+ Partner with CFSO/PMO leaders to translate strategic objectives into clear action plans, ensuring alignment across functional teams and delivery of timely implementation.
+ Coordinate stakeholders across Government & External Affairs, Sustainability Strategy, Legal, Risk, Operations, and Corporate Communications to maintain visibility, accountability, and progress on enterprise initiatives.
+ Track and complete milestones, dependencies, and deliverables tied to policy, sustainability, and regulatory projects, escalating decisions or risks where needed.
+ Facilitate, arrange and lead executive briefings, governance updates, and periodic progress reports for MUFG Americas and Tokyo management, summarizing key actions, outcomes, and forward priorities.
+ Help strengthen internal planning discipline by introducing light-touch project management practices that support transparency, follow-through, and measurable results—without unnecessary complexity.
Enterprise Sustainability Strategy & Corporate Alignment
+ Support and drive MUFG Americas’ enterprise sustainability strategy and planning, ensuring alignment with MUFG Group’s global Carbon Neutrality Declaration and related initiatives.
+ Track and assist in the implementation of emerging sustainability, technology, and market trends—including transition finance, digital infrastructure, and climate-related policy—and assess implications for MUFG’s business and regulatory strategy.
+ Partner with the Sustainability Strategy and Planning Office, CFSO, and other functions (Legal, Risk, Compliance, Operations) to help coordinate cross-functional initiatives and governance efforts – while ensuring delivery to internal or external timelines.
+ Support MUFG representation in relevant sustainability trade groups, policy dialogues, and industry forums, highlighting the firm’s leadership in responsible finance.
+ Engage periodically with policymakers and regulators on sustainability-related issues in coordination with MUFG Government & External Affairs and the Washington Representative Office.
Public Policy & Government Affairs
+ Support executive engagement with key U.S. policymakers and regulatory officials through the Government & External Affairs function, including preparation of policy materials, meeting briefs, and follow-up analyses.
+ Support MUFG Americas’ public policy and stakeholder engagement, providing research, analysis, and insight into U.S. and international legislative, regulatory, and executive branch developments impacting MUFG’s operations and reputation.
+ Monitor policy issues relevant to MUFG as a regulated financial institution, including prudential regulation, supervisory frameworks, digital assets, stablecoins, AI and data policy, and financial market infrastructure.
+ Identify and assess opportunities arising from U.S.–Japan economic and trade relations, including participation in the U.S.–Japan Economic and Trade Partnership (~$550 billion framework) and other bilateral initiatives related to energy, infrastructure, and digital innovation.
+ Collaborate with the Washington Representative Office and Tokyo Head Office to ensure consistent messaging, alignment, and coordination across policy initiatives.
+ Contribute to the preparation of written policy summaries and executive briefs distributed to internal stakeholders, business lines, and clients as part of MUFG’s broader policy engagement and visibility efforts.
