Distinguishing Features of the Class: Under general supervision and guidance of higher level ultrasonography technologists, an incumbent of this class performs technical work involving the application of ultrasound to designated portions of the body to assist physicians in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities. This level is the training level used for technicians with entry level qualifications. Incumbents perform ultrasound procedures utilizing department protocol and standard protocol as outlined by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This level is distinguished from the Senior Ultrasonography Technologist in that the higher level is the full performance level. Supervision is not a feature of this class. Does related work as required. Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only) General: Instructs patients in preparation for ultrasound procedures; Properly positions patients and obtains pertinent clinical information prior to beginning ultrasound procedures; Acquires high quality ultrasound images for Radiologists’ review, making adjustments to ultrasound equipment to the correct setting for each examination as prescribed by the attending physician; Manages images and ultrasound examinations in the Radiology PACS system; Prepares and maintains records and files of procedures; Ensures equipment is functioning properly on a continual basis. When Assigned To Cardiology: Prepares patients for echocardiography testing; Operates echocardiography equipment to record ultrasound from the heart walls, valves and support structures; Records all test results to ensure diagnosis of structure and valve abnormalities and plural and pericardial effusions; Develops, cuts and mounts echocardiography results; Conducts stress tests using accepted procedures and monitors the results. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes: Good knowledge of the techniques of ultrasonography; good knowledge of ultrasonography and related equipment; knowledge of human anatomy; skill in the application of the techniques of ultrasonography; skill in the operation of ultrasonography equipment; ability to handle sick and injured patients properly; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e‑mail and database software in performing work assignments; thoroughness; reliability; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Experience:
High school or equivalency diploma and either (a)eligibility* to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) exam for either the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), or Registered Vascular Technician (RVT) credential or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam for Sonographer (post-primary), Vascular sonographer, or Breast sonographer or possession of certification and current registration by ARDMS or ARRT in the above disciplines or in Sonography (primary) from ARRT; or (b) successful completion of 60 credits* of college education in a health related field and two years of experience where the primary function of the position was patient care; or (c) successful completion of an ultrasound or vascular technology education program which included successful completion of at least 900 clinical hours of experience attained prior to graduation. *Special Note: Education beyond the secondary level must be from an institution recognized or accredited by the Board of Regents of the New York State Education Department as a post-secondary, degree-granting institution.
