The Division of Medical Genetics has an outstanding opportunity for a highly skilled Research Scientist/Engineer 3** **(FULL-TIME) in the laboratory of Mary-Claire King PhD.
Field of Research:
Human genetics, long-read RNA sequencing, stem cell differentiation, protein chemistry.
Purpose of the research project(s):
This individual will work in a team effort as part of the King Laboratory to use RNA sequencing and protein profiling to study inherited cancers and neuropsychiatric disorders. This position requires a strong background in long read RNA sequencing, stem cell growth, and differentiation protocols, protein production and purification, and devising and testing novel approaches for applying these approaches.
This position is experimental biology and requires full-time in-person work at the Health Sciences Building, K wing. Remote work is not possible for this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
_Perform direct RNA sequencing in patient derived neuronal cells (45%)_
• Stem cell tissue culture growth and differentiation protocols, cell transduction and transfection.
• Preparation and quality control of DNA and RNA samples.
• Construction of Direct RNA sequencing libraries and Nanopore sequencing.
• Perform routine analysis of data and assist with troubleshooting and data quality control
• Perform computational analysis of RNA reads.
_Developing tools to enable Nanopore profiling of full-length proteins (45%)_
• Molecular biology techniques such as cloning, PCR, and sequencing (Sanger, short and long read)
• Cloning vectors for protein expression
• Protein purification using bacterial overexpression systems.
• Prepare samples for small molecule mass spectrometry and nanopore profiling.
• Perform routine analysis of data and assist with troubleshooting and data quality control
• Assist with computational analysis of small molecule mass spectrometry and nanopore profiling data
_Additional duties (10%)_
• Present analysis findings at group meetings and national conferences, as appropriate.
• Provide status reports to the Principal Investigator on status of projects.
• Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related Life Sciences field and four years of relevant experience.
_Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration._
A** **D** **DITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Four or more years of experience in stem cell tissue culture, RNA sequencing, expressing and purifying proteins
• Proficient in Nanopore long read DNA and RNA alignment and variant calling tools.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• PhD in Stem Cell Sciences, Genetics/Genomics, Biology, Biochemistry or equivalent.
• Must be self-motivated and able to take initiative, work independently, and learn new techniques.
• Ability to work, collaborate and communicate well within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong organizational abilities and laboratory skills, including the ability to keep detailed records of procedures performed and sample tracking.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$72,288.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$132,612.00 annual
