    The CSDE Biodemography Lab and Eisenberg Anthropological Genetics Lab are seeking a well-qualified candidate to fill the role of Research Technologist 1. CSDE is an interdisciplinary research group offering infrastructure support for population researchers, and the Biodemography Lab and Eisenberg Anthropological Genetics Lab offer these researchers consultation and services to facilitate work involving biomarker and genetic marker data. The Biodemography Lab uses enzyme immunoassay and similar methods to measure a variety of biomarkers in biological specimens, often for large-scale studies. The Eisenberg Anthropological Genetics Lab uses PCR- and qPCR-based assays to measure genetic markers, especially related to telomere biology.

    Job Description

    The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks associated with efficient daily operation of biosafety level 2 laboratories. Under direct supervision of the Biodemography Director, the Research Technologist will:

     

    + Perform routine enzyme immunoassays and PCR/qPCR assays

    + Prepare buffers, solutions, and reagents

    + Process biological specimens to prepare them for assay

    + Assist in grant and contract lab work, including:

    + Receiving/sending supplies from/to client labs

    + Performing assays

    + Organizing laboratory data; sometimes including basic analyses

    + Assist in project management, including organizing biomarker collection supplies, assisting in IRB applications and status reports, organizing project documents, scheduling project meetings, and preparing agendas and minutes

    + Manage ordering and supplies inventories

    + Monitor inventory of general supplies and reorder as needed

    + Maintain records of orders placed and received

    + Routinely update a database of ordering history and expenditures by budget number

    + Housekeeping, including washing glassware and following the cleaning and decontamination schedule specified in the lab’s site-specific safety manuals

    + Assist in recording and monitoring assay quality control data for all assays

    + Equipment maintenance, including:

    + Managing regular maintenance for pipettes, including tracking which are due for calibration, decontaminating and packing them for shipment to calibration shop

    + Performing daily decontamination and maintenance tasks for equipment, including freezers, water purification system, and microplate washers and readers

    + Assist in maintaining an archive of biological specimens, including monitoring refrigerators and freezers and organizing cold storage space

    + Assist in maintaining adherence to UW EHS rules for chemical handling and waste removal for all lab work; maintain Laboratory Safety System database and the Lab Safety Manual

    + Assist in maintaining adherence to UW EHS rules for biosafety level 2 lab operations and biohazardous waste removal

    + Maintain UW EHS site-specific safety protocols, lab safety manuals, and training records for all lab users

    Minimum Requirements:

    + Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in basic biology and/or the social sciences.

    Additional Requirements

    + Proficiency in or ability to learn ELISA techniques, processing large numbers of specimens accurately, and the use of a BioTek microtiter plate reader and Gen5 software.

    + Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    Desired Qualifications:

    + Experience in lab research (either as a student or employee), with a proven record of careful attention to detail and conscientious work habits.

    + The ability to work to high standards both independently and as an integral and active member of a close-knit research team is essential.

    + Commitment to a quality of work that meets CSDE high standards for excellent research and excellent service is critical.

    + Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and proficiency in other Microsoft Office software is required; experience with statistical software or programming skills are desirable.

    + Experience in UW procedures for ordering supplies and in adhering to UW EHS rules is preferred, as is experience with the UW procurement, IRB, and other systems.

    + Must be willing to work with potentially infectious biological specimens collected from humans.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $44,256.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $52,104.00 annual
