Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services or Laboratory Manager. The tissue laboratory support technician is primarily responsible for performing semi-technical duties to assist the pathologist and tissue lab technician in the Tissue Lab.
1. Primary responsibilities are accurately accessing and labeling specimens and tissue cassettes.
2. Responsible for performing routine procedures for fixation, processing, embedding, and sectioning (including frozen sectioning) and staining Maintain all certifications and licensures.
3. May also assist physicians with fine needle aspirations and bone marrow aspirations.
4. Adheres to policy and established procedures in the performance of assigned duties.
5. Responsible for assisting the Tissue Laboratory Technician in providing coverage for all surgical cases and on-call situations, maintaining pathology slides, blocks and records, coordinating supply inventory, reporting pathology results to physicians, LIS database maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
6. Organizational skills to maintain appropriate and up-to-date inventory of the pathology lab and maintain organized storage areas.
7. Helps in the clinical lab as needed for bone marrow slide preparation or other POC testing.
8. Effective communication with the pathologists and clinical lab leadership about pathology lab concerns and issues.
9. Helps in answering the telephone and providing information concerning patient results, tests, reference values, take and relays accurate messages and records request for pathology services.
10. Assists in the collection of statistics and participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities.
11. Follows all corporate and department policies regarding laboratory billing.
12. Follows all regulations regarding health and safety and universal precautions.
13. Participates in the orientation and training of students and new laboratory assistants.
14. Attends department meeting and continuing education programs
15. Maintain a safe and patient friendly environment.
16. Focuses on the accuracy of results.
17. Evaluates abnormal results and initiates corrective action with follow up
18. Implements troubleshooting skills as needed to ensure continual operation of the laboratory instrumentation.
What qualifications you will need:
+ High School Graduate or GED. Formal training as a Medical Assistant is preferred. Excellent communication skills are required.
+ Medical Terminology, computer knowledge and CPR certification are preferred.
+ Licensed by the State of Nevada as a Laboratory Assistant
+ 3 years experience in a pathology laboratory
