The Role

As a valued Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through next-gen ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish technical plans. Conduct research and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas in developing next-gen lightweighting technology. Write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

+ Plan and execute collaborative scientific or engineering research generating new knowledge and innovative technology in polymers and polymer composites for vehicle lightweighting

+ Drive internal and external collaborations

+ Maintain awareness of the state-of-the-art in the areas of responsibility

+ Prepare timely high quality technical reports and make presentations to ensure effective communications

+ Generate intellectual property to protect new inventions in the area of responsibility

+ Assist other employees in accomplishing their project goals

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

+ U.S. Citizenship required pursuant to government contract

+ PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields

+ Candidates must have either a minimum of three (3) years of relevant industry experience or a Ph.D. degree with demonstrated research experience in a related discipline.

+ Understanding of structural simulations using computer programs (NASTRAN/LS-DYNA/ABQUS)

+ Knowledge in simulation tool development for both performance and manufacturing processes

+ Familiarity with polymer composite processing concepts

+ Understanding of composite testing procedures and use of testing equipment, such as mechanical test frames and thermal analysis equipment

+ Interpersonal skills and communication methods to work effectively with GM internal and external customers

What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

+ Experience with advanced numerical methods, and fluency in one of the programming languages such as Fortran, C++, and Python

+ Knowledge in transitioning products from prototype manufacturing to volume production

+ Knowledge in resin transfer molding, composite compression molding and metal forming

+ Good publication record
