Position Summary:
SUNY Cortland is accepting applications for a tenure-track instructor or assistant professor in the Sport Management Department. Job title is dependent on terminal degree status. The teaching requirement is four classes in the fall and three in the spring for the instructor rank and three fall and spring classes for the assistant professor rank. Undergraduate student advising is required in both roles. Both positions are eligible for continuing appointment.
SUNY Cortland offers the largest and oldest sport management program in the SUNY system. The department’s mission focuses on high-impact practices and career-driven outcomes for students. High-impact practices include fieldwork, internships, study abroad, applied classes, and more. Students may choose from five concentrations (event management, media & I.T., sales, international sport, and intercollegiate sport) within the major.
The department features a unique range of elective classes in areas such as streaming media production, videography, social media, sport analytics, international sport management, entrepreneurship, sport tourism, disability and sport, video games, fantasy sports, and more. All students are required to work one semester with SUNY Cortland’s Athletic Department and complete a full-time, 15-credit senior internship.

Salary Range: $58,000-$60,500 (Instructor)/$64,000-$67,300 (Assistant Professor)

Major Responsibilities:
Teaching
+ Teach undergraduate and/or graduate sport management courses.
Scholarship/Research
+ Engage in scholarly work and activities that involve undergraduates or graduate students as appropriate to the application and receipt of tenure in the SUNY Cortland Sport Management Department.
Service
+ Advise and mentor students in sport management.
+ Provide service to the department, School of Professional Studies, the University, SUNY , academia, and the community.
Required Qualifications:
Instructor Rank
+ Master’s degree in sport management or a related field.
Assistant Professor Rank
+ Terminal degree or Ph.D. or doctoral candidate who is all but dissertation ( ABD ) with degree conferral by September 2026 in sport management or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Higher education teaching experience or experience working with college-aged populations.
+ At least five years of professional experience in digital media production or information technology, the ability to demonstrate advanced knowledge in videography, digital streaming media, and information technology as they relate to the sports industry.
+ Experience could include audio/video production, digital media production software (e.g., CapCut, Adobe Premiere/Rush, OBS Studio, Audacity, Descript, Production Truck, or similar), live streaming platforms, artificial intelligence, and the ability to integrate emerging technologies into any of the following classes: SPM 236: Introduction to Digital Video Streaming, SPM 238: Sport Videography, SPM 287: Fantasy Sports and Video Games, SPM 335: Information Technology in Sport, SPM 336: Intermediate Digital Video Streaming. SPM 338: Advanced Sport Videography, SPM 346: Social Media Operations in Sport, SPM 435: Applied Information Technology in Sport, SPM 436: Advanced Digital Video Streaming, SPM 438: Applied Sport Videography, or SPM 635: Information Technology in Sport.
+ Scholarly productivity with peer-reviewed publications or a strong interest in future scholarly work involving students.
