Proven ability to lead technical teams while exhibiting strong problem-solving skills around job site safety and coordination with external vendors
Job Description:
Summary
The Senior Fiber Technician serves as a highly skilled technical and leadership role responsible for overseeing the installation, upkeep, and operation of the ISU fiber optic and raceway systems. This position independently manages fiber optic and raceway system projects, mentors junior staff, and provides on-site leadership when the Cable Plant Team Supervisor is unavailable.
This position strongly prefers BICSI Installer Certification or Journeyman License and extensive knowledge of Fiber Optic and Raceway infrastructure. The Senior Fiber Technician is responsible for project site leadership, safety oversight, vendor coordination, and material procurement decisions as needed. The position exercises independent judgment in the field, ensuring work quality, compliance with university and industry standards, and documentation accuracy. This position is a senior level role on the team.
Example of Duties • Provides support for complex network infrastructure components, including network switches and routers.• Upgrades and troubleshoots all new and existing hardware and software, network systems, email administration, LAN configuration, and administration.• Monitors all network utilization and capacity and resolves network performance issues.• Performs network maintenance to ensure network operates correctly with minimal interruption.• Monitors data traffic and controls network resource performance to ensure high-quality transmission.• Coordinates and schedules vendors and maintenance providers.
Level Guidelines• Senior-level position applies advanced and specialized expertise and competencies• Typically receives general supervision with high level guidance on the most complex assignments• Completes assignments which are moderately difficult or difficult• Resolves issues, including atypical issues, and makes recommendations• May lead projects of limited scope• Functions as “go to.” Responds to inquiries and requests from others inside and outside work area• May act as a lead, assigning tasks and providing guidance to lower-level workers• May provide supervision to one to two other staff or lead a small work team• Provides guidance to students
