    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs provides oversight and leadership for the MSW and BSW programs in academic standards, explicit and implicit curriculum design and implementation, faculty development, academic affairs, and student achievement. This oversight extends to all program options (OMSW, Garden City, Poughkeepsie, Middletown, Hauppauge and NYC). The ADAA supervises the director of the BSW programs, the coordinator of the OMSW program, and the directors of Practicum Education and Student Affairs. The ADAA works in concert with the Center coordinators in the planning of center activities and focus areas. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs consults with faculty around course assignments, hires and evaluates adjunct faculty, oversees and approves course schedules, and assigns faculty to courses within MSW program. The ADAA will explore areas for SSW growth and development, including flexible learning options, develop collaborations with state and community agencies, and identify and pursue federal training grants.

     

    This role also includes being the Director of the MSW Program. While there is a strong relationship of the responsibilities of the MSW Program Director and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs specific responsibilities of the MSW Program Director position entail operationalizing key accreditation standards related to the MSW program’s curriculum processes and objectives, addressing student retention, academic progress, and degree completion. The MSW program director plans orientations for adjunct faculty, plans course scheduling, and monitors the implementation of the curriculum.

    SALARY INFORMATION:

    In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $140,000 - $150,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.

    REPORTS TO:Dean of the School of Social Work

    RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

    Ensures quality and integrity of the MSW, OMSW and BSW programs across all program locations:

    + Provide leadership and supervision to the Director of Practicum Education, Director of Student Affairs, Coordinator of the OMSW Program, and Director of the BSW Program.

    + Oversees the revision and updating of the BSW and MSW Student Handbook and Practicum Education Handbook to assure clear articulation of academic policies and educational processes, and consistency across school and university publications.

    + Provide direction and leadership of academic administrators and administrative support staff responding to requests for exception to academic policies, preparing and tracking academic petitions for leaves of absence, withdrawals, late drops, etc. for BSW and MSW program.

    + Provide oversight of assessment of students on leaves of absence to determine suitability for the return to the program.

    + Work with Director of Practicum Education to address challenges in students’ progress toward foundation and advanced level competence.

    + Facilitate communication and problem resolution in addressing academic-related concerns identified by students and/or their professors.

    + Respond to student grievances in accordance with established school and university policies.

    Design, implement and maintain systems and procedures for working with students at academic risk:

    + Oversee implementation of academic standards including development of academic probation contracts.

    + Direct academic affairs administrators and administrative support staff in tracking and notification of students with low GPAs, students on probation or at-risk within the MSW program.

    + Oversee processes around allegations of plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty and interpret policy and procedures, collect and file forms and evidence of plagiarism, refer egregious or repeat offenders to the Academic Standards Committee, consistent with School and University policies.

    + Provide leadership to faculty, academic advisors, and the practicum education department around policies and procedures in the School of Social Work related to academic standards within the BSW and MSW programs.

    + Develop and implement protocols to identify academically at-risk students to promote positive student outcomes.

    Curriculum design and implementation for the MSW program at all locations:

    + Provide leadership in the delivery of a coherent and integrated explicit and implicit curriculum for class and practicum education.

    + Consult with Curriculum Committee on curriculum implementation, curriculum renewal, and adjunct faculty development.

    + Plan course offerings for all program sites within established time frames and in accordance with policy and procedures provided by the Office of the Provost and University Registrar.

    + Consult with faculty around course assignments and assign faculty to classes, collaborating with Center Coordinators and other stakeholders as necessary.

    + Tracking and approving faculty workload.

    + Provide guidance to the Chair of the Curriculum Committee to ensure that all curricula effectively operationalize the core competencies at the foundation and advanced levels and that all course syllabi are up to date and comport with established school, university, and accreditation standards.

    + Provide leadership around licensing preparation and outcomes associated with the implicit and explicit curriculum and work with faculty to integrate licensing preparation within the curriculum.

    Student Advisement and Registration:

    + Direct the academic affairs administrative team to prepare and disseminate program and advisement materials to support academic advisement processes that are responsive to the differential needs of the School’s diverse student body.

    + Direct academic affairs administrators, center coordinators, and practicum education administrators to implement advisement and registration procedures.

    + Liaison with University offices to assure integrity of registration processes and implementation of student academic affairs policies and processes.

    + Direct academic affairs administrators and administrative support staff to ensure compliance with academic clearance processes for graduation from the MSW program.

    Student Affairs:

    + Provide supervision and oversight to the Director of Student Affairs and Director of Practicum Education to promote the development of student activities and student engagement that is responsive to the differential needs of the School’s diverse student body at all program locations.

    + Supervise and collaborate with administration and faculty to promote opportunities for student participation in formulating and modifying policies affecting academic and student affairs.

    + Coordinate academic supports through external (University) resources for BSW and MSW students (e.g., Student Access, Counseling Services, writing and statistic tutors, career services).

    Committee Membership:

    + Member of Dean’s Administrators’ Team

    + Member of SSW Curriculum Committee (ex-officio)

    + Co-Chair of the Self-Study/Accreditation Committee related to implementation of the CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS)

    + Member of the Practicum Education Committee

    + Member (ex-officio) of the Assessment Committee

     

    Perform other duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in public speaking.

    + Strong identification with the purposes and values of the social work profession and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.

    + Experience in social work education, including demonstrated leadership skills through committee work and other activities.

    + Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, administration, and staff.

    + Ability to manage time in a fast-paced office environment, and to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

    + Comprehensive knowledge of graduate social work education, current and emerging trends in social curriculum and social work practice.

    + Strong management and organizational skills.

    + Commitment to competence in using administrative and instructional technology.

    EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    + M.S.W. and doctorate in social work or an allied field is required.

    + Minimum of 10 years post-master’s practice, teaching, and administrative experience is required.
