State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS) is currently recruiting for a Transportation Engineer (Transportation Engineer III) in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. Nature of Work: This position serves as a Transportation Engineer III (TE III) within the Traffic Development and Support Division (TDSD), providing technical support for Maryland’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Programs. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the implementation, operation, and evaluation of ASE initiatives, including the Maryland SafeZones Work Zone Program, I-695/I-83 Corridor Program, ASE on the Inter County Connector (MD 200), and other SHA operating ASE programs. The TE III performs engineering reviews, deployment coordination, data analysis, and program documentation tasks that support ASE operations, enhance program effectiveness, and ensure compliance with state regulations, COMAR, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This position also works under the direction of the ASE Program Manager. It plays a critical role in advancing Maryland’s Vision Zero goals and the Governor’s Work Zone Safety initiatives. Safety is a core function of the role, and the incumbent is directly accountable for ensuring ASE deployments support reduced work zone speeds, improved compliance, and safer working conditions for SHA personnel and contractors. Responsibilities include engineering reviews, safety-focused deployment coordination, data analysis, and documentation tasks that support the operational and safety effectiveness of the ASE program.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in professional engineering.
Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
+ Knowledge of traffic engineering principles and work zone safety practices.
+ Familiarity with MUTCD, MdMUTCD, and related traffic standards and guidelines.
+ Skill in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting traffic safety data.
+ Ability to prepare clear, concise, and professional reports and correspondence.
+ Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
+ Proficiency with traffic analysis software and Microsoft Office.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
+ Strong organizational and time management skills.
+ Customer service skills for engaging with the public and stakeholders.
Notes:
1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2. Possession of a master's degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.
