Summary The primary function of this position is to serve as Qualified Boiler Plant Operator for the Boiler Operations, Facility Management Service at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS), San Juan, Puerto Rico. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to: Prepare the boilers for the semiannual and annual inspections. Maintain all logs and boiler operation reports will call service personnel in the event of a major break down or an emergency situation in the boiler plant and inform their supervisor. Demonstrate knowledge of basic electricity to test and perform replacement of fuses, switches, wires and other electrical components. Checking the operation of safety equipment such as flame extinction, automatic reigniting, low water cut outs, high pressure cut outs, pre ignition and post ignition purge safeties. Properly operating each type of boiler and system being utilized in the Boiler Plant including but not limited to lighting off, warming up, placing in service and shutting down each boiler. Operate feed water pumps, heat reclaimers, hot water generators, air compressors, steam condensate pumps, boiler plant and all related equipment in the operation of the steam boiler plant and the Laundry Plant. Work Schedule: Rotating Shift, Weekend and Holidays Position Description Title/PD#: Boiler Plant Operator/PD13433A Physical Requirements: Boiler plant operators work in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment. The work requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending and crouching. Boiler plant operators frequently lift, carry and move boilers plants, chemical supplies such as chemical treatment drums weighing up to 40 pounds and more than 40 pounds occasionally unassisted or with assistance if available. Boiler plant operators work indoors and occasionally work outside for short periods. Operators are subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, flue gases and fumes in the work area. Boiler plant operators are subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from caustic chemicals, acids, hot water, steam and contact with piping and boilers. In addition, they work on ladders and on top of boilers and feed water tanks. ***Must be proficient in spoken and written English. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
