The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) Electrocardiograph (EKG) is assigned to the Cardiology Department under the Specialty Care Service line. The MIT operates electrocardiographic equipment to perform specialized examinations and studies involving exercise stress testing, ambulatory monitoring of arrhythmias, and electrocardiograms on chronic patients. Responsibilities The MIT (EKG) technician performs a variety of diagnostic procedures which include but are not limited to: Electrocardiogram: Performs electrocardiograms on GE MAC VU360 throughout the facility and editing EKG's on MUSE software. Incumbent is required to recognize normal and abnormal heart patterns including acute infarction and determine appropriate techniques for best results. Technician must be able to recognize cardiac emergencies and report serious findings to the provider immediately. Treadmill Stress Test: Technician is required to operate the EKG/CASE machine in coordination with treadmill equipment. The technician must monitor the patient's capacity for exercise tolerance with increased stress throughout the test. The technician must accurately observe the patient's condition, making notations of vital signs and other diagnostic information in accordance with established practices and in response to physician's demand or changes in patient's condition. The technician is required to perform a crash cart check list prior to the start of the clinic. The technician is required to obtain consent for the performance of a test. Holter Monitoring: Technician applies monitor and explains monitoring procedures to the patient and instructs them on its operation. Technician removes monitor from patients when applicable and sends monitor for processing. The technician must provide a summary of monitor findings to the reading provider for interpretation. Perform routine clerical procedures for the purpose of maintaining accurate records so that easy recall of patient examinations may be achieved. Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations are not delayed due to lack of necessary equipment and supplies. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Work Schedule: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; Monday through Friday Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Medical Instrument Technician - Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG) Citizenship. Must be a citizen of the United States. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. In addition, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GRADE DETERMINATION Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG) - GS-7 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-6) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be such experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities and: Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to Holter monitoring and ability to perform such tests Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including exercise stress testing Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation. Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with the work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that require normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
